Chapter 6 - WHAT FAMILY MEANT IN COURT
The protective-order hearing took place three weeks after New Year’s.
Rodrigo sat beside his attorney in a charcoal suit. He looked clean, rested, and deeply offended by the existence of consequences.
Ernesto had separate counsel.
Teresa sat behind neither man.
My attorney presented the hospital records, the security clips, the forged loan application, and the deleted camera files.
Rodrigo’s attorney argued that financial stress had created a family dispute and that the video showed only a brief physical confrontation.
The judge watched Rodrigo test the camera angle on December 18.
She watched him tell Ernesto that I needed to lose control.
Then she watched the emergency clip of him holding me while his father approached.
Rodrigo stopped looking at the screen.
Teresa testified next.
She admitted knowing that Rodrigo wanted to pressure me into signing loan documents. She admitted mocking me and ordering me to clean the table after I was hurt.
When asked why, she said, “I believed a wife was supposed to protect the family.”
My attorney asked, “Did protecting the family include protecting Elena?”
Teresa cried before answering.
“No.”
Ernesto chose not to testify on advice of counsel.
Rodrigo did.
He insisted he had never intended for his father to burn me. He said the power-of-attorney form was a precaution because pregnancy had made me anxious. He described the restaurant as a family investment and accused me of destroying it because I wanted complete control.
My attorney placed the RSG ownership records in front of him.
“Name one family member besides you who held an ownership interest.”
Rodrigo looked toward his parents.
“No one yet.”
“Who would own the restaurant after Casa Salazar entered bankruptcy?”
“RSG.”
“And who owned RSG?”
“I did.”
His answers removed the last disguise from the plan.
The judge extended the protective order and granted me exclusive use of the condo. Rodrigo was prohibited from contacting my medical providers, entering the hospital during delivery without my written consent, or using third parties to pressure me.
Those orders did not terminate his future parental rights.
After the baby was born, family court would consider paternity, safety, and any request for visitation under the evidence available then.
The main criminal and civil cases would continue separately.
Outside the courtroom, Rodrigo stopped beside his mother.
“You testified against your own son.”
Teresa looked at him.
“I testified about what we did.”
“You think Elena will let you near the baby now?”
“No,” she said. “I don’t.”
The honesty silenced him.
Ernesto walked past without speaking to either of them.
For the first time, the Salazar family did not leave together.
Two days later, Casa Salazar’s employees voted to help Teresa continue smaller catering jobs under the supervision of an outside accountant. Ernesto was barred from financial control while the lender litigation proceeded.
The company might survive.
It would never again operate as the private kingdom where obedience replaced accountability.
Detective Carter called me that evening.
Rodrigo had offered to plead guilty to assault if prosecutors dismissed the financial charges.
They refused.
