Chapter 6 - THE COMPANY MEETING WHERE HE CALLED ME CRAZY

Caleb requested an emergency board meeting before the directors could suspend him permanently.
He arrived at Hale Home Defense wearing a navy suit and the calm expression that had persuaded clients to trust him for years.
Vanessa sat behind him with her attorney.
She had filed for divorce from Daniel and claimed he had financially controlled her throughout their marriage.
Daniel brought bank records showing the opposite.
Every director attended. So did Rachel, the forensic accountant, and two investigators from the bank’s fraud division.
Caleb stood at the head of the conference table.
“My private marital mistake does not justify stripping me of a company I built.”
My father’s photograph hung on the wall behind him.
“You joined the company eleven years after it was founded,” I said.
“I transformed it.”
“You also transferred one-point-two million dollars out of it.”
“That money funded strategic research.”
“Through your girlfriend’s shell company?”
Vanessa’s attorney whispered to her.
Caleb ignored the question.
He displayed the neighborhood security alert on the conference screen.
“At 5:42 p.m., Marissa activated a full emergency response because she discovered an affair. She weaponized our company’s equipment for personal revenge.”
One director, Susan Avery, looked at me.
“Why did you press the button?”
“To preserve evidence and summon a witness while two people who had entered my home under false pretenses were present.”
Caleb laughed.
“They were in a swimming pool, Susan. Marissa wanted sirens, neighbors, and public humiliation.”
He turned toward the board.
“This is the instability I have been managing for years.”
For a moment, the old reflex returned.
Explain softly.
Avoid embarrassing him.
Make the room comfortable.
Then I remembered him telling Vanessa he had spent twenty-four years learning where to push.
I connected my laptop to the conference screen.
“Let’s discuss what you were managing.”
The ninety-second recording played.
Caleb’s own voice filled the room.
If she hits you, throws something, or threatens us, I file the emergency petition tonight.
Nobody moved.
The video showed him disable the camera.
It captured the plan to use Paige.
The missing company funds.
The forged loan.
The expectation that I would trade my house to protect our children from scandal.
Caleb stared at the screen.
“That recording is illegal.”
“You designed the system,” Susan said. “The emergency archive is disclosed in every client agreement.”
“It was my private residence.”
“It was Marissa’s property, and you intentionally created an event for the purpose of recording her.”
Caleb pointed at me.
“She edited it.”
A security engineer entered remotely and confirmed the cryptographic signature, original timestamp, device identity, and unbroken cloud upload.
The file had not been altered.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“He said the camera was off.”
Caleb turned toward her.
“Stop talking.”
“You told me there would be no recording unless Marissa lost control.”
“Vanessa.”
“You said she would attack me.”
His mask finally slipped.
“You knew what we were doing.”
“I knew about the divorce plan. I did not know you forged the loan.”
Caleb’s attorney tried to end the meeting.
The board continued.
By unanimous vote, Caleb was removed as president and terminated for cause. His company devices were seized. His office was sealed pending the criminal investigation.
Security waited outside the conference room.
Caleb gathered his papers slowly.
As he passed me, he whispered, “You destroyed the father of your children.”
Paige stood from the visitor row.
“No, Dad.”
Caleb turned.
She was crying, but her voice remained clear.
“You asked me to help you set a trap for Mom.”
“I was protecting you from her.”
“You used me because you knew she trusted me.”
Caleb looked toward Owen.
Our son did not meet his eyes.

For the first time, the family Caleb had manipulated was in the same room comparing his stories.
None of them matched.
