"My husband built his career on justice, but when I showed up bleeding, the only man who came for me was the one he called a criminal."

CHAPTER 1: The Woman at the Hospital Door

My husband built his career on justice, but when I showed up bleeding, the only man who came for me was the one he called a criminal.

I walked into St. Jude’s Medical Center at 11:42 p.m. with no shoes, one hand on my stomach, and rainwater dripping from the ends of my white coat.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The emergency room was full of tired faces, quiet crying, vending machine coffee, and fluorescent lights too bright for midnight. Then everyone saw the red footprints I was leaving across the polished floor.

A nurse dropped a clipboard.

A man in the waiting area stood halfway up.

I tried to speak, but my throat felt full of glass.

“Help me,” I whispered. “Please.”

A nurse in blue scrubs rushed toward me. Her name tag said Sarah Jenkins.

She caught me before my knees hit the floor.

“Trauma One!” she shouted. “Now!”

The room erupted around me.

Hands lifted me onto a gurney. Someone cut open my soaked coat. Someone wrapped a monitor around my stomach. Someone asked my name.

“Nora,” I breathed. “Nora Sullivan.”

The doctor froze for half a second.

Everyone in Chicago knew that name.

Not because of me.

Because of my husband.

Arthur Sullivan, the district attorney with perfect hair, perfect speeches, and perfect photographs beside his pregnant wife at charity dinners.

The man who promised the city he would clean up corruption.

The man who told voters he protected women.

The man who had smiled at a fundraiser three hours earlier while I sat locked in our guest bathroom, pressing a towel against my mouth so the neighbors would not hear me cry.

“My baby,” I whispered.

Sarah leaned close, her hand firm over mine. “We’re checking now. Stay with me.”

A heartbeat burst through the monitor.

Fast.

Frightened.

Alive.

I started sobbing, but no sound came out.

Then the pain pulled me under.
