CHAPTER 3

CHAPTER 3: THE ARREST BESIDE THE COFFINS

At the funeral, Daniel still thought he was safe.

That was his final mistake.

He thought the chapel was full of people who believed his performance.

He thought Vanessa standing beside him proved he had already replaced me.

He thought my silence meant I had nothing left.

Then the chapel doors opened.

The sound was small.

Just old hinges and the soft rush of cold daylight.

But Daniel released my hair instantly.

Two detectives walked in first.

Detective Ruiz wore a dark suit, his badge clipped at his belt. Beside him was Detective Hall, carrying a tablet. Three uniformed officers followed.

Behind them came Evelyn Shaw.

In her hands was a sealed evidence box.

Daniel’s face shifted.

Only slightly at first.

A twitch near his mouth.

A quick blink.

Vanessa’s smile vanished completely.

Detective Ruiz stopped at the end of the aisle.

“Daniel Mercer and Vanessa Cole,” he said, his voice steady, “you are under arrest for conspiracy, insurance fraud, and two counts of first-degree murder.”

The chapel erupted.

Someone cried out.

My father stood.

Gloria Mercer, Daniel’s mother, whispered, “No. No, this is a mistake.”

Daniel pointed at me.

“What did you do?”

I touched the side of my temple where pain pulsed beneath my skin.

Then I looked at him.

“I listened.”

The officers moved toward him.

Daniel backed up, panic breaking through the handsome mask he had worn for cameras.

“This is insane,” he said. “My children are dead and you’re arresting me at their funeral?”

Detective Hall lifted the tablet.

“We have traffic footage, phone location data, insurance records, and payment trails connecting you and Ms. Cole to the staged collision.”

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No. Daniel handled all of that.”

Daniel turned on her.

“Shut up.”

It was the first honest thing either of them had said in public.

Evelyn walked to me and crouched beside the coffins.

“Claire,” she whispered, “are you hurt?”

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to be strong enough that even my body refused to give Daniel one more piece of me.

But my cheek burned, my temple throbbed, and my babies were still gone.

“Yes,” I said.

Evelyn’s face tightened.

She turned to Detective Ruiz.

“He struck her in front of the mourners. Add assault and witness intimidation.”

Daniel laughed once, sharp and desperate.

“She’s lying.”

The entire chapel answered him with silence.

Not one person looked away.

Not one person stepped forward for him.

Vanessa tried to slip behind a pew, but Officer Daniels caught her wrist.

“Hands where I can see them.”

The handcuffs clicked around Daniel’s wrists beside the two white coffins.

That sound did not bring my children back.

Nothing ever would.

But it did something I did not expect.

It gave the room back its truth.

For three weeks, Daniel had filled every space with lies.

At that moment, the lies collapsed.

My aunt began sobbing into her hands.

My father walked to me slowly and knelt on the floor.

He did not say anything.

He simply wrapped his arms around me while Daniel shouted my name from the aisle.

“Claire! Tell them this is a mistake!”

I did not turn around.

May you like

I kept one hand on Lily’s coffin and one on Noah’s.

“No,” I whispered. “The mistake was thinking I would bury the truth with them.”
