Chapter 4 - THE MESSAGE THAT STOLE FIVE YEARS

Fifteen days later, Joanna entered Fairfax General District Court wearing a navy suit and no makeup over the fading yellow bruise beneath her eye.
Randy sat at the opposite table with his attorney. His confidence had returned in pieces. He had shaved, chosen an expensive gray suit, and arranged his face into the patient expression of a man burdened by an unreasonable wife.
Eden sat directly behind him.
Joanna’s request for a two-year protective order was supposed to be straightforward. Randy’s attorney turned it into a trial of her character.
“You continued living with your husband after these alleged incidents?”
“Yes.”
“You never reported earlier abuse?”
“No.”
“And you secretly recorded private conversations?”
“After he began threatening me.”
“Because you suspected everyone around you was conspiring against you?”
Randy glanced toward the judge as if the question proved everything.
Joanna’s attorney stood. “Your Honor, we have the recordings.”
The courtroom speakers carried Randy’s voice.
At noon, you’ll serve lunch. You’ll tell Mom you slipped in the bathroom.
A second recording followed.
Once we get her into Mom’s house, we file the petition. No one will question it after the doctor’s letter.
Then Eden’s voice:
Make sure she looks unstable in the messages. Keep pushing until she loses her temper.
Eden gripped the bench.
Randy’s attorney stopped taking notes.
Joanna’s father was called as a witness. Daniel explained the hacked email account, the false cease-and-desist letter, and the returned correspondence.
Randy’s attorney tried to portray him as an interfering father who had never approved of the marriage.
“Isn’t it true that you wanted your daughter to leave Mr. Cole before the wedding?”
“Yes.”
“Because you disliked him.”
“Because I found evidence that he had stolen from a former employer.”
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
Randy leaned toward his attorney, whispering furiously.
Daniel continued. “Mr. Cole intercepted my warning. He then sent an email from my compromised account telling Joanna she was no longer my daughter.”
Joanna’s attorney displayed the forensic report. The false message had been created on Randy’s laptop two days before the wedding.
Joanna had read that email hundreds of times during the loneliest years of her life.
She had blamed her father for every unanswered holiday. Every birthday without a call. Every night Randy said, “I’m the only person who stayed.”
Now she turned toward him.
“You watched me grieve him.”
Randy’s attorney touched his arm, warning him to remain silent.
Randy ignored him.
“He was trying to control you!”
“So you erased him?”
“I protected our marriage.”
“You made sure I had nowhere to go.”
His face changed. The careful mask slipped.
“Because you always threatened to leave!”
The courtroom went silent.
Joanna stood motionless.
Randy realized too late what he had admitted.
“I threatened to leave after you hurt me,” she said.
“You pushed me until I snapped.”
“By saying no?”
“You embarrassed me in my own house!”
“It was my house.”
Randy slammed his palm onto the table.
“It was supposed to become ours!”
The judge ordered him to sit down.
Eden rose from the bench. “This is enough. My son is under pressure because Joanna and her father have spent years looking down on us.”
Joanna faced her.
“You paid Randy’s restitution after he stole from his employer.”
Eden’s lips parted.
“You suggested the fake psychiatric letter. You took money borrowed in my name. And when he beat me, you told him which concealer I should use.”
“I never told him to hit you.”
“You only helped him hide it.”
At the back of the courtroom, two detectives entered.
Eden looked toward Randy.
He did not look back.
The judge granted Joanna the protective order and prohibited Randy from entering the townhouse or contacting her.
As Eden hurried into the hallway, a detective stopped her.
“Eden Cole?”
Everyone near the courtroom doors turned.
“You’re under arrest for conspiracy, identity theft, and financial exploitation.”
Eden’s handbag slipped from her shoulder.
“Randy,” she called.
Her son remained seated beside his attorney.

For years, Eden had demanded that Joanna sacrifice herself to protect him.
When protection finally cost Randy something, he let his mother stand alone.
