Chapter 8 - The Line I Drew in Public

Valerie and Richard had been using the carriage apartment over my garage “temporarily” for nearly four months while their condo renovation was supposedly delayed.

On Wednesday morning, through Evelyn, I had a formal notice delivered instructing them to vacate within seven days and preserve all financial records relating to any use of Whitmore Table vendors, accounts, or representations. I also revoked their access to the townhouse staff and changed the gate code.

It was the first move I could not soften later without looking uncertain.

Richard called within twenty minutes.

“Margaret, this is extreme,” he said in the measured tone he used when he wanted to sound like the only adult in the room. “We’re trying to stabilize things.”

“By attaching my name to your debts?”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“Then explain it in writing to counsel.”

He abandoned calm faster than I expected. “If Valerie loses her expected distribution, everything collapses.”

There it was. Not grief. Not love. Not family.

A calculation.

“What collapses?” I asked.

He was silent too long.

“Richard?”

“The Harbor loan,” he said finally. “And the private note.”

I had not known about a private note.

By the time Robert arrived that evening, I had learned enough to understand the outline. Richard and Valerie had borrowed heavily against their studio, their condo, and at least one short-term private obligation. They had been floating minimum payments while counting on my succession planning to mature into liquid control.

Valerie came with Robert, furious that he’d refused to drive her separately.

“You threw us out,” she said in my kitchen. “Over bookkeeping.”

“I threw you out because you laid hands on me and built plans around my incapacity.”

She looked at Richard then, a quick sharp look he thought I missed.

“Did you tell her about the private note?” I asked.

Valerie’s expression collapsed into confusion. “What private note?”

Richard swore under his breath.

In that tiny break between them, I saw the first crack in whatever story he had been telling her.

May you like

He had not only used me.

He had been using her too.
