Chapter 3 - The Custody Plan Hidden in Plain Sight

The emergency protection order was granted the next morning.

Caleb could not return to the house or contact Lily without supervision. Janice was barred from seeing her until the investigation was complete.

By noon, Caleb had hired a lawyer and filed for temporary custody.

His petition described Emily as volatile, absent, and emotionally unstable. It included statements from Janice, two neighbors, and a private child evaluator Emily had never met.

The evaluator’s report claimed Lily had repeatedly expressed fear of her mother.

Every quoted sentence sounded like the “Mommy story.”

Emily’s attorney, Marisol Greene, read the file twice.

“This wasn’t improvised,” she said. “They’ve been preparing this for months.”

Caleb had begun taking Lily to private appointments on Tuesday afternoons while Emily worked at the hospital. He told Emily they were going to the library. In reality, he brought Lily to Dr. Warren Pike, an old friend of Janice’s who wrote custody evaluations from a private office outside Dublin.

His notes described Lily as sleepy, withdrawn, and confused.

The same symptoms Caleb had secretly created.

Marisol obtained Caleb’s financial records through the custody case. That was when the second betrayal surfaced.

Caleb owed more than $140,000 from online gambling, personal loans, and a failed investment Janice had encouraged him to hide. Their house was protected because Emily had purchased it before the marriage, but Lily had a trust left by Emily’s late father.

The trust paid for education, medical care, and necessary living expenses. An independent trustee controlled the money, but Caleb and Janice believed a custodial parent could pressure the trustee into approving expensive residential treatment and private caregiving.

Janice had already created a company called Bright Path Family Support.

Its address was her house.

Her plan was to gain custody of Lily, bill the trust for full-time “therapeutic care,” and use the payments to rescue Caleb from debt.

The bathroom games were rehearsals for the custody evaluator.

The medication made Lily appear damaged.

Emily sat at her kitchen table staring at the incorporation papers until the words blurred.

For months, Caleb had praised himself for “taking over bedtime” whenever Emily worked late. Janice had told everyone Emily should be grateful.

They had not been helping her.

They had been building a case against her inside her own home.

Lily appeared in the doorway wearing pajamas and holding her teddy bear.

“Mommy?”

Emily immediately closed the folder.

Lily looked toward the dark hallway.

“Is Daddy mad because I told?”

Emily pulled her into her arms.

“Daddy is responsible for what Daddy did.”

“But I said the words.”

“Because you were scared.”

Lily pressed her face into Emily’s shoulder.

“The Mommy story wasn’t true.”

Emily held her tighter.

“I know, sweetheart. Now we tell the true one.”
