Chapter 4 - THE BALLROOM WHERE THEIR NAME COLLAPSED
Theodore Monroe called a press conference the following morning.
He stood on the front steps of Monroe Holdings in Manhattan with Celeste beside him and accused Adrian of abusing his financial power to punish a woman for defending herself against an aggressive relative.
News outlets repeated the statement within minutes.
Photographs showed Elena standing in the fountain.
Theodore’s version claimed she had fallen during an argument and that Adrian used the accident as an excuse to cancel the marriage after discovering the Monroe family would not give him social control of their businesses.
By noon, the headline had shifted.
BILLIONAIRE ABANDONS FIANCÉE AFTER MOTHER DISRUPTS ENGAGEMENT PARTY.
Adrian watched the coverage from Bennett Industrial’s boardroom.
Nathan placed three folders on the table.
“We can respond with the financial records, the blackmail letter, and witness statements from the party.”
“Not yet.”
Nathan frowned.
“The stock is falling.”
“Let it.”
“You’re losing millions.”
“Only on paper.”
Elena sat at the end of the table wearing a simple black dress.
“What are you waiting for?” she asked.
“Theodore thinks the court of public opinion is his best weapon. I want him confident enough to use it.”
Adrian’s investigative team had uncovered something larger than fraud against him.
For nearly six years, Monroe Holdings had inflated property values, moved debt into shell companies, and used charitable foundations to conceal losses.
The engagement to Adrian had not been intended merely to rescue a failing business.
Theodore needed Bennett Industrial’s clean assets as collateral before auditors discovered the truth.
Celeste had been offered as the bridge.
Adrian had been targeted long before he proposed.
That evening, the Monroe Foundation held its annual Heritage Gala at a hotel near Central Park.
Theodore refused to cancel.
He believed canceling would look guilty.
More than four hundred guests attended.
Adrian arrived with Elena and Nathan twenty minutes before Theodore’s speech.
The room fell quiet when they entered.
Celeste stood near the stage in a white gown, surrounded by friends who had laughed at the fountain.
Her face hardened.
“What are you doing here?”
Adrian showed her the invitation.
“I’m still the foundation’s largest donor.”
Theodore approached with two security guards.
“Remove him.”
Nathan handed one guard a court order.
“Mr. Bennett has obtained an injunction preventing Monroe Holdings from destroying, transferring, or concealing records connected to his investments.”
Theodore glanced at the document.
“This is theatrical.”
“So was your press conference,” Adrian said.
Reporters gathered nearby.
Theodore smiled for them.
“If you wish to discuss our private dispute, my attorneys will contact you.”
Adrian looked at the ballroom screens.
“I prefer your audience.”
Nathan signaled the audiovisual operator.
The screens behind the stage changed.
Bank transfers appeared.
Forged approvals.
Shell-company records.
The Palm Beach deed.
The blackmail report prepared against Adrian.
Guests turned toward Theodore.
He raised his voice.
“These documents are fabricated.”
Vivian Monroe stepped out from behind a group of trustees.
“No, they are not.”
Theodore stared at his wife.
Vivian had left the estate the previous night. After learning about Lindsey Hale, she provided Adrian’s attorneys with access to financial documents Theodore kept in a private safe.
She carried a flash drive.
“I found the original files in our home,” she said.
Celeste whispered, “Mother, stop.”
Vivian faced her daughter.
“You knew he was stealing.”
“I was trying to save the company.”
“You were trying to save the name.”
Celeste’s eyes filled.
“They’re the same thing.”
“No,” Vivian said. “That is what your father taught you so you would protect him.”
The ballroom doors opened.
Federal investigators entered with representatives from the state attorney general’s office.
Theodore looked toward Adrian.
“You arranged this.”
“You created it.”
Theodore’s composure vanished.
“You arrogant little bastard. You think because your mother scrubbed floors, you understand sacrifice?”
Elena stepped beside her son.
Theodore pointed toward her.
“This woman spent her entire life teaching you to resent people who succeeded.”
Elena looked around the ballroom.
“I cleaned rooms like this.”
A few guests lowered their eyes.
“I learned something important,” she continued. “The people who have the most are often the most frightened someone will discover how they got it.”
Theodore laughed.
“You are nothing without his money.”
Elena’s expression remained calm.
“I had nothing before he had money. I know the difference.”
Celeste turned to Adrian.
“Please tell them to stop.”
He looked at her.
“My father will go to prison.”
“He stole from investors, employees, and charities.”
“He is still my father.”
“And she is my mother.”
Celeste flinched.
The words returned them to the fountain.
“You wanted revenge,” she said.
“No. Revenge would be pushing you into the water and laughing.”
Adrian glanced at the investigators.
“This is accountability.”
Theodore moved toward a side exit.
An agent stopped him.
The ballroom erupted into whispers as he was informed that warrants had been issued for financial fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy.
Theodore twisted toward Adrian.
“You will never belong in rooms like this.”
Adrian looked around.
“I own the hotel.”
Several guests gasped.
It was true. A Bennett real estate subsidiary had quietly purchased the property two years earlier.
Theodore’s face collapsed.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You spent your life believing a name was more valuable than the things built beneath it.”
He looked at the screens displaying the financial records.
“Now everyone can see what your name was standing on.”
Theodore was led out.
Vivian sat down and covered her face.
Celeste remained beside the stage as friends slowly moved away from her.
No one laughed.
No one offered a hand.
Adrian saw panic spread across her face as she experienced the thing she had feared most.
Not poverty.
Irrelevance.
She looked at Elena.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena studied her.
“Are you sorry you pushed me?”
Celeste’s lips trembled.
“Or sorry everyone saw you do it?”
Celeste could not answer.
May you like
Elena nodded once.
“That’s what I thought.”
