Chapter 1 - THE CHAMPAGNE TOWER

The first thing Ethan Cole did when he saw Claire Bennett at his wedding was shove her into the champagne tower.
Both hands hit her upper body.
Hard.
Claire went sideways into three tiers of crystal coupes before she had time to catch herself.
Glass exploded across the stone terrace.
Champagne splashed over her cream-white blazer.
Her phone skidded beneath a chair.
Three hundred guests turned toward the sound.
Claire landed on one hand, stunned more by the fact that Ethan had actually touched her than by the impact.
Six months earlier, she had shared a home with him.
That afternoon, he was wearing a navy tuxedo and a boutonniere, standing beneath white flowers beside another bride.
“You were useful, Claire,” Ethan said.
Claire stared up at him.
Several feet behind him stood Vanessa Reed.
Long blonde waves.
Expensive white wedding gown.
A look on her face that couldn’t decide whether Claire was an intruder, a jealous ex, or something much worse.
From the left side of the terrace, estate-security manager Mark Dalton was already running toward them.
Claire pushed herself up.
Ethan grabbed the back of her blazer.
He yanked her backward.
“You paid for this.”
That sentence confirmed why Claire had driven ninety miles from Manhattan to Hudson Valley.
Not suspicion anymore.
Confirmation.
Claire twisted sharply against his grip.
Mark was almost there.
Ethan tightened his fist in the fabric.
Claire knocked his wrist away and shoved him once in the chest.
He stumbled backward.
Not far.
Enough.
“I froze every card.”
The terrace seemed to change around them.
Ethan’s face did first.
Vanessa’s did second.
Claire reached for her phone.
At 8:12 that morning, she had called her bank and frozen the black metal charge card Ethan had once been authorized to use.
At 8:37, the florist’s final payment failed.
At 9:04, the rental company’s authorization failed.
At 9:26, the wedding planner called the venue because Ethan’s backup card had declined too.
By noon, three vendors were refusing additional service without replacement payment.
Ethan had somehow kept the reception moving anyway.
Until Claire arrived.
She retrieved the phone.
A bank fraud screen filled it.
Ethan saw enough to panic.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.”
Claire looked at him.
“I know exactly which card number you used.”
Vanessa moved closer.
“What card?”
Ethan ignored her.
Claire angled the phone toward Mark.
He didn’t need financial details.
He saw the security alert.
The photographs of merchant charges.
And the short video that had already uploaded from the estate camera directly above the terrace.
Ethan saw that too.
He reached for the phone.
Mark stepped between them.
“Sir.”
Ethan stopped.
Mark did not tackle him.
Did not threaten him.
He simply placed his body where Ethan could no longer reach Claire.
Vanessa looked between them.
“What is she talking about?”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Nothing.”
Claire almost laughed.
The wedding planner appeared behind Vanessa.
She looked pale.
“Ethan.”
He turned.
The planner lowered her voice.
“The caterer needs another payment method before dinner service.”
A murmur rippled through the nearest tables.
Vanessa stared at her new husband.
“Another payment method?”
Claire wiped champagne from her sleeve.
Then opened the banking app again.
For forty-eight hours she had been trying to understand how her ex-boyfriend had charged more than $186,000 to an account he had no reason to touch.
Now she knew at least one thing.
May you like
He had not done it by accident.
The question was why Ethan had believed Claire’s money would still be available after marrying somebody else.
