Chapter 3 - THE MESSAGES MY SON NEVER FORWARDED

I read the messages twice.

May: Jessica grabbed me again.

Christopher: Mom, she’s under a lot of stress.

May: She took papers from Dad’s office.

Christopher: Please don’t turn this into another family war.

May: I am scared when she comes here alone.

Christopher: I’ll talk to her.

He never talked to me.

May had been documenting everything because our granddaughter, Sophie, told her to.

Sophie was sixteen.

She had noticed her mother becoming more volatile after losing hours at work.

“She said if I ever felt afraid, I should keep proof,” May said.

The irony made my stomach turn.

Jessica had apparently given her daughter good advice she did not expect her mother-in-law to use.

Christopher claimed he believed the incidents were arguments that became physical only because May “got in Jessica’s space.”

May stared at him.

“I’m sixty-eight.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

“What did you mean?”

He had no answer.

Robert quietly moved from the dining room to the living room, giving us privacy without leaving.

I asked why Jessica wanted our paperwork.

Christopher finally admitted they were having financial trouble.

Not ordinary trouble.

He and Jessica had purchased a larger house in New Albany eighteen months earlier after Jessica received a promotion.

Then her agency lost two national accounts.

Her salary fell by nearly forty percent.

Christopher’s consulting income was inconsistent.

Their mortgage was $6,800 a month.

They had two car leases, private-school tuition for Sophie, and more than $70,000 in credit-card debt.

I knew none of it.

“You could have asked me for help,” I said.

Christopher looked away.

“That was the problem.”

“What problem?”

“Jess said you’d make us explain every dollar.”

“She was right.”

He laughed bitterly.

“You always make help feel like an audit.”

There was truth in that.

I had spent forty years in corporate finance.

Numbers were how I understood risk.

Christopher had grown up believing every request for help came with a spreadsheet and a lecture.

That might explain why he hid trouble.

It did not explain why Jessica had my house key.

Then May said something I had not heard before.

May you like

“She asked me when you planned to change the trust.”

Christopher went completely still.
