Chapter 13 - THE EVIDENCE THEY CREATED THEMSELVES
After the assessment, Bethany stopped defending the original story.
She gave investigators access to her phone, email, and cloud photographs.
The evidence did not appear in one perfect message.
It emerged through a sequence of ordinary records.
Diane texted reminders before Rosie’s visits:
Use the white wall for pictures.
Don’t let Evan see the yellow mark yet.
Ask Rosie about Daddy when she’s tired.
A message sent after the first trust request read:
One more documented incident should be enough for emergency placement.
Bethany replied:
I don’t like how hard you grabbed her.
Diane answered:
Then make sure she learns to cooperate.
Location history placed both women at Bethany’s house when most photographs were taken. Preschool records established that Rosie had been in their care during those periods.
The trust administrator identified forged authorizations submitted from Diane’s tablet.
A handwriting examiner compared the practice script with notes Diane wrote on legitimate caregiving forms.
Colin preserved Bethany’s original letter and envelope. Postal records confirmed when it was mailed, preventing Diane from claiming it had been created after the birthday confrontation.
The pediatrician could not assign every bruise to a specific hand, but she could explain that the pattern reflected repeated force rather than one isolated accident.
Bethany provided the final piece.
She described the birthday party.
Rosie had refused to repeat that I left her alone at night. Diane squeezed her arm and sent her to the bathroom to “think about the family.”
Bethany followed.
When Rosie said she would tell me about Grandma, Bethany grabbed her again and threatened the rabbit.
“I wanted her to stay quiet until after the trust hearing,” Bethany said in her sworn statement.
There had never been a scheduled trust hearing.
Diane told her one was coming to maintain urgency.
Bethany admitted she had believed the lie because she needed it to be true.
The evidence package went to prosecutors and family court.
Marissa warned me that criminal proceedings could move slowly and that plea negotiations might produce consequences that felt smaller than the harm.
I was no longer waiting for punishment to repair Rosie.
