Chapter 4 - THE INCIDENTS THAT ALWAYS HAPPENED AROUND EVELYN

I asked Daniel for the file.
He refused.
Then, twenty minutes later, gave it to me.
That small reversal mattered.
Maybe he understood what he had created.
Maybe he was simply frightened.
Either way, there were fourteen entries.
We checked them one by one.
January 18 — Nancy left outside unsupervised.
Evelyn had been visiting.
My camera showed me carrying laundry between the patio and living room every few minutes.
February 3 — Medication within child’s reach.
Children’s chewable vitamins.
Placed on a high counter.
Photographed from an angle that made them look lower.
Photograph taken by Evelyn.
February 21 — Nancy misses lunch.
Evelyn had picked her up early from kindergarten for a dentist appointment.
The school lunch remained untouched because Nancy wasn’t there.
March 9 — Backyard gate left open.
Evelyn had taken Nancy into the yard.
April 14 — Child found crying alone in bedroom.
I had been taking a shower.
Daniel was home downstairs.
May 2 — Samantha forgets pickup.
Marissa was scheduled to pick Nancy up.
Evelyn arrived too and later described me as “absent.”
Every event had one thing in common.
Evelyn either witnessed it, participated in it, or supplied the interpretation afterward.
Daniel sat beside me in the hospital family room reading his own notes.
His face changed gradually.
“She gave me most of these.”
“Yes.”
“I thought…”
“What?”
“I thought she was helping me remember.”
“No.”
I turned the phone toward him.
“She was helping you believe.”
Daniel closed the document.
Our marriage did not suddenly repair because he saw the manipulation.
In some ways it became worse.
Because he had chosen to collect the material.
Evelyn may have shaped it.
He asked for it.
I told him:
“You didn’t trust me enough to ask what actually happened.”
He whispered:
“I know.”
“That isn’t enough.”
“I know.”
At least he stopped defending himself.
Then Officer Carter returned.
Investigators had spoken with the online retailer that sold a magnetic sculpture matching what appeared in my camera footage.
The order was placed Tuesday.
Two days before Nancy became sick.
Purchaser:
Evelyn Mercer.
Shipping address:
My house.
Recipient name:
Samantha Mercer.
I stared at the report.
“She ordered them under my name.”
Daniel looked sick.
Evelyn’s attorney—she had one by then—said it was intended as a gift.
That explanation almost worked.
Until we learned Evelyn had photographed the unopened package on my porch before carrying it inside.
The photograph was sent to Daniel.
Caption:
Another box Samantha forgot she ordered.
Daniel stared at it.
“I remember this.”
“What did you think?”
“That you were buying too much stuff.”
“I didn’t buy it.”
“I know.”
May you like
The magnets had entered our house already wearing my name.
That could not be an accident.
