Chapter 9 - THE MONEY REACHED AMANDA
The hospital investigation spread beyond vendor compliance when auditors followed the payments from Coastal Clinical Interiors.
Naomi’s company had paid Austin’s consulting business.
Austin’s company had then made recurring transfers to Amanda.
The description on several payments read:
FAMILY LOAN REPAYMENT.
That could have been innocent.
Amanda had financially helped Austin after his failed Denver business.
Monica knew that much.
But the timing mattered.
Some transfers occurred within forty-eight hours of Coastal receiving hospital payments.
Amanda’s attorney provided loan documents showing she had indeed loaned Austin $180,000 over several years.
The loan was real.
So were repayments.
The question became whether Amanda knew hospital money was effectively flowing through Naomi and Austin back to her.
Amanda said no.
Then auditors found an email she had sent Austin.
Naomi’s hospital work is finally cleaning up the Denver mess. Keep paying me monthly and nobody needs to know whose contract saved whom.
Monica read that sentence with her attorney present.
She felt almost nothing at first.
Then fury arrived slowly.
Amanda had known.
Maybe not every invoice.
Maybe not every approval.
But she knew the hospital contracts were funding Austin’s recovery.
And she benefited.
Monica called Erin Walsh, an old family friend who had served on the foundation board with Amanda.
“Did Mom ever discuss Austin’s consulting work?”
Erin hesitated.
“Once.”
“What did she say?”
“That getting Austin into Pacific Crest projects was the first useful thing she’d been able to do for him since Denver.”
Monica closed her eyes.
“Did you think she meant hospital contracts?”
“I assumed Westbridge hired him.”
“They did.”
“Then what’s wrong?”
Monica realized how easily legitimate facts had been arranged around an illegitimate omission.
Westbridge really hired Austin.
Naomi’s company really did work.
Amanda really lent him money.
The misconduct lived in the hidden relationships between those truths.
That was why the secret marriage mattered.
Without it, Coastal looked like another subcontractor.
With it, Austin was approving money to his legal spouse and receiving money back.
The broader consequence arrived two days later.
Pacific Crest froze new work with Coastal pending review.
Westbridge terminated Austin’s consulting assignment for failure to disclose the relationship.
Amanda formally resigned from the foundation board.
No one arrested anybody at a gala.
No headlines announced instant ruin.
But the structures that had protected Austin were coming apart.
Then Naomi asked to speak with Monica.
Not through Caroline.
Not through Amanda.
Directly, with both attorneys present.
She had one thing Monica did not know.
“Austin didn’t stay married to me because he forgot to finish a divorce.”
Monica stared.
“I know.”
Naomi shook her head.
“No. You know the hospital reason.”
“What other reason is there?”
Naomi’s eyes lowered.
“Your mother asked us not to divorce.”
