Chapter 11 - THE DOCUMENT THAT BROKE REBECCA

I showed Rebecca the letter through our attorneys.

She read the paragraph three times.

“You signed this?” she asked Julian.

We were in Samuel’s conference room again.

Julian stared at the tabletop.

“Yes.”

“You told me Elena manipulated your dad into making her executor.”

“I was angry.”

“You told Lily her aunt was stealing what Grandpa wanted us to have.”

“I shouldn’t have.”

“You hit your sister at your father’s funeral over a key to documents you already knew existed.”

Julian’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t know what Dad put in the safe.”

“But you knew there was a record.”

“Yes.”

Rebecca stood.

For one second I thought she would leave.

Instead she said:

“You need to tell Lily the truth.”

Julian looked panicked.

“She’s fourteen.”

“She thinks Elena destroyed our family.”

“Elena doesn’t need her dragged into this.”

Rebecca’s voice sharpened.

“You dragged her into it when you blamed Elena.”

That was true.

It also made me uncomfortable.

I did not want a child receiving an estate accounting seminar.

So we agreed Julian would tell Lily only what she needed:

He had taken money he was not authorized to take.

I was legally required to deal with it.

The family’s financial problems were not caused by me.

No amounts.

No adult details.

Julian resisted.

Then agreed.

That night Lily texted me.

Dad told me some of it. I’m sorry I ignored you.

I stared at the message for a long time.

Then replied:

You never owed me an apology. I love you. None of this is yours to fix.

The sentence felt familiar.

Dad should have said it to Julian thirty years earlier.

Maybe all of us needed it.

Julian’s company lender eventually required a restructuring plan.

His business survived for the moment, smaller than before.

He sold two company vehicles and shut down a speculative renovation project.

Twelve employees stayed.

Nine found other jobs or left.

No victory.

Just consequence.

The estate still had to recover money.

Truth alone had not solved that.

And Dad’s equal inheritance plan created a new question.

Could I administer it fairly after my brother had hit me, lied about me and taken money he knew he was forbidden to take?

Being executor suddenly felt less like Dad trusting me.

It felt like Dad handing me the hardest version of love he knew.
