Robert had signed it.
Not because Richard tricked him.
Not because someone forged his name.
Because Robert was desperate.
Two years earlier, Carrington Coastal had needed $12 million within three days to remain inside a loan covenant.
Richard offered a temporary solution through Vale Meridian.
Robert approved an internal transfer structure that outside counsel had never reviewed.
The money came back.
The crisis passed.
Robert told himself the shortcut had worked.
Richard learned something more valuable than the money.
Robert would break his own rules to avoid public embarrassment.
After that, Richard expanded the structure.
Robert stopped looking closely.
Amelia found him in the main house study after the investigators interviewed him.
He looked older.
“You gave him the first opening,” she said.
“Yes.”
“And when Diane questioned him?”
“I told her Richard had my confidence.”
“When I questioned him?”
Robert’s eyes filled.
“I told you your marriage was under strain and you should stop bringing business home.”
Amelia turned toward the bookcase.
She remembered that conversation.
She had apologized to Richard afterward.
The shame of that landed differently now.
“I helped him too,” she said.
Robert looked up.
“I let him speak for me. I let him make me feel childish for asking questions. I kept telling myself peace was maturity.”
“You trusted your husband.”
“I avoided knowing my husband.”
Neither of them spoke for a while.
Richard’s wrongdoing remained Richard’s.
But the family system around him had been built from convenient silences.
That realization damaged Amelia’s certainty about what justice should look like.
Carrington’s attorneys could blame Richard alone.
It would be cleaner for lenders.
Cleaner for employees.
Cleaner for the family name.
It would also be false.
Amelia instructed counsel to disclose Robert’s role accurately.
Her father closed his eyes.
“You know what that could cost me.”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
For once, he did not ask her to protect him.
Then Julia called.
Richard had agreed to meet.
Not through lawyers.
Not at home.
He wanted Amelia, Robert, and Claire in the same room.
Julia advised against going without counsel nearby.
Amelia agreed to the safeguards.
“Why would he ask for Claire?”
Robert said.
Amelia didn’t know.
But Claire did.
