Chapter 10 - THE MAJOR TWIST

The final shape of the betrayal came from Richard.
Not voluntarily.
His attorneys provided messages during the investigation and business review.
One exchange between father and son changed everything.
Evan had sent Richard the fake paternity report.
Richard replied:
I knew something was wrong.
Evan:
Claire is going to leave. She’s already talking to lawyers.
Richard:
Then protect yourself.
Evan:
I need her to sign the acknowledgment first.
Richard:
Why does that matter if the child isn’t yours?
Evan:
Because she knows about North Sound.
There.
Two separate lies met in one conversation.
Richard knew about North Sound.
He did not know the paternity evidence was fake.
Evan knew both.
Then came a later message.
Richard:
The lab report does not look right. Have counsel verify it.
Evan:
Do NOT put lawyers into this yet. Claire will find out.
That was clue one reinterpreted: Richard’s sudden hostility had begun with the fake report but became entangled with financial fear.
Then another message.
Richard:
If this is false, you are finished with me.
Evan never answered.
Clue two: by the yacht trip, Richard had doubts.
He went anyway.
Then the last exchange, sent the morning we boarded.
Richard:
She signs. We return. Nobody improvises.
Evan:
Understood.
Clue three.
The yacht confrontation had not been intended, in Richard’s mind, as a murder plan.
It had been intended as coercion.
That did not make it acceptable.
It made the escalation more believable.
Two controlling men each entered the day believing they could frighten a pregnant woman into solving their problems.
Then I refused.
Richard discovered Evan had lied about how much I knew.
Evan discovered his father was questioning the paternity story.
Their alliance began collapsing while I was trapped between them.
And the phrase “wrong bloodline” suddenly meant something different.
Richard was not saying he intended to kill a baby from another man.
He was raging at the idea that he had put his company and freedom at risk over a child he had been told was not his family.
A lie Evan had created to weaponize Richard.
The biggest twist was not that Richard was innocent.
He wasn’t.
It was that Evan had built the entire situation around his father’s worst traits.
Richard’s obsession with legacy.
His fear of humiliation.
His habit of solving problems through pressure.
Evan knew exactly how to activate all three.
And Richard, even after recognizing the story might be false, continued because by then North Sound gave him his own reason to keep me quiet.
The men had manipulated each other.
I had been the common obstacle.
Dana finished reading the message summary.
“What do you want to do?”
I put both hands over my stomach.
For weeks, I had imagined Richard as the architect and Evan as his weak son.
That was wrong.
Evan had designed the lie.
Richard had chosen to become useful to it.
Now I had to decide whether to cooperate fully with every investigation knowing it could permanently destroy the family my child would be born into.

I answered without looking away.
“Yes.”
