Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN IN THE RED DRESS

Claire was arrested forty-eight hours later while attempting to board a flight from O’Hare to Mexico City.

Marcus had purchased two tickets.

Only one passenger arrived.

He had taken the money and abandoned her.

During questioning, Claire maintained that she had planned a short vacation because she was afraid of me. She described Marcus as a supportive employer and insisted she knew nothing about the financial scheme.

Then investigators showed her the recovered messages.

Marcus had preserved their conversations, including every promise Claire made.

Once Daniel is suspended, I’ll file the petition.

Lily will repeat what we practiced.

My mother’s diary makes him look unstable.

After the accounts clear, we disappear.

Claire asked for an attorney.

Marcus was arrested the next morning at a rental property in Indiana. Most of the missing money was recovered from accounts controlled by his brother.

He immediately offered to cooperate.

Claire’s case against me collapsed before it reached a courtroom.

Mine against her was only beginning.

The emergency custody hearing took place six days after Lily’s phone call.

Claire wore a navy dress and no wedding ring. She sat beside her attorney with the calm, injured expression that had convinced friends, teachers, and neighbors that I was the difficult one.

Her attorney argued that the security recordings were invasive, incomplete, and taken out of context.

“Mrs. Foster made a terrible parenting decision,” he said. “That does not make her a danger to her children.”

My attorney stood.

“This was not one decision. It was a coordinated plan to fabricate abuse, steal marital assets, compromise state systems, and remove two children from the country.”

The judge reviewed the hospital records first.

Then the security footage played.

On the courtroom monitor, Diane handed Noah to Lily.

Lily’s recorded voice said, “My back already hurts.”

Diane replied, “Stop being dramatic.”

A few people in the gallery shifted.

The next clip showed Claire in the red dress.

“Don’t embarrass me by calling your father.”

She left while Lily struggled to hold the baby.

Claire kept her eyes on the table.

Then the final recording played.

Marcus sat at my computer discussing the plan to frame me.

“Once he’s charged, you file for emergency custody.”

Claire’s recorded voice answered, “No judge gives children to a thief.”

The courtroom went completely silent.

Claire finally looked at me.

For the first time since I had known her, she had no story ready.

The judge granted me temporary sole custody, suspended Claire’s unsupervised contact, and ordered both children protected from Diane as well.

But the emotional climax came afterward.

As deputies prepared to escort Claire back to custody, she called Lily’s name.

Lily stood beside me, holding my hand.

“Baby, come hug Mommy.”

Lily did not move.

Claire’s voice cracked. “I made mistakes, but I love you.”

Lily looked up at me.

“Do I have to?”

“No.”

Claire’s face twisted.

“Daniel, don’t do this.”

“I’m not doing anything.”

She leaned toward Lily.

“Your father is angry. When he calms down, we’ll be a family again.”

Lily tightened her fingers around mine.

“You said Daddy didn’t want me to call.”

Claire froze.

“Sweetheart—”

“He answered.”

Her voice was quiet, but every person nearby heard it.

“You told me he’d be mad, but he came home.”

Claire began crying.

Lily continued.

“You didn’t.”

Claire reached toward her.

A deputy stepped between them.

“Lily, please. Mommy was trying to protect you.”

My daughter shook her head.

“You left me with the baby because you wanted to go with Mr. Marcus.”

“That isn’t fair.”

“Neither was making my back hurt.”

Claire looked at me as if I had placed those words in Lily’s mouth.

I had not.

That was the part she could not accept.

Lily was no longer repeating anyone’s story.

She was telling her own.

The deputies led Claire through the side door.

She kept looking back until the door closed.

Lily pressed her face into my jacket.

I knelt carefully and held her.

“I’m sorry I called you,” she whispered.

“Never apologize for calling me.”

“Even when you’re working?”

“Especially then.”

May you like

She began to cry.

So did I.
