Chapter 13 - PUTTING THE RECORD WHERE CORINNE COULDN’T HIDE IT

The final trust documents were recorded where required and formally delivered to every institution that needed them.
The professional trustee accepted control.
Mara signed the documents confirming her role as trust protector.
Ethan received a written explanation of what he could and could not do with Maisie’s property.
He read every page.
Twice.
The Carter house could not be pledged for Ethan’s business.
Maisie’s investment assets could not be borrowed against for household emergencies.
Major distributions required independent approval.
Ethan did not resent the restrictions anymore.
They protected him from becoming the version of himself Rachel had feared under pressure.
The financial review also closed most of the Corinne issue.
Corinne agreed to return the disputed money beyond documented reimbursements.
No dramatic bankruptcy.
No instant ruin.
A repayment schedule.
Interest.
Legal fees.
Embarrassment.
Real consequences were often boring.
Leah contacted the mobile notary and both witnesses to preserve their statements regarding Rachel’s competence.
Ellen Greene’s hospital notes were secured.
The old medical authorization was formally revoked everywhere it remained on file.
Maisie’s pediatric records listed Ethan as primary contact.
Mara and Joan were emergency contacts.
Nobody else.
Ethan also made one personal correction.
He invited Rachel’s parents, who lived in Vermont, to stay for a week.
Corinne had repeatedly told him they found visits “too painful.”
That was partly true.
But Rachel’s mother, Diane, admitted another reason.
“Corinne made us feel like guests in our daughter’s house.”
Ethan looked down.
“I let her.”
“Yes.”
Diane did not soften it.
Then she reached across the table.
“You were grieving.”
Ethan shook his head.
“I don’t want grief to become permission.”
Diane studied him.
“Good.”
That answer mattered more than absolution.
On the final night of their visit, Diane gave Ethan something.
A sealed envelope.
Rachel’s handwriting.
ETHAN — WHEN YOU’RE READY TO BE ANGRY WITH ME TOO.
Ethan stared at it.
“Where did you get this?”
“Rachel mailed it to me before she went back to the hospital.”
“Why didn’t you give it to me?”
Diane’s eyes filled.
“She told me not to until you understood the rest.”
Ethan almost laughed.
Even Rachel had participated in deciding when he could know things.
Then he remembered Part 10.
Love did not automatically make control harmless.
He took the envelope.
But he did not open it.
Not yet.

First, there was one final legal meeting with Corinne.
And for once, Ethan wanted to finish the present before returning to the dead.
