Chapter 4 - The Order Richard Recognized
The gold seal inside Elena’s wallet had frightened Richard for a reason unrelated to Ava.
Three months earlier, Elena had signed an administrative preservation order in an entirely separate civil matter.
She did not know Richard was connected to it.
The case involved Northline Youth Partners, a private education-services vendor that held contracts with several Ohio school districts.
A former employee alleged Northline had inflated invoices for behavioral-support programs that were never fully delivered.
The matter landed in Elena’s division because of a contract dispute and emergency request to preserve corporate records while jurisdiction was determined.
Elena signed the routine preservation order.
Nothing more.
She never saw Richard’s name.
Northline’s ownership was layered through three holding companies.
One belonged partly to Sterling Development.
Richard had seen Elena’s signature months earlier.
That was why he recognized the seal.
And why he tried to hide the credential from Harris.
The next morning, Elena disclosed the connection to her court’s administrative counsel.
She recused herself from every Northline-related proceeding immediately.
Another judge would handle them.
Richard could no longer plausibly claim she was targeting him through her office.
That did not comfort him.
It made the existing preservation order more dangerous.
The records were already locked before Elena knew he was involved.
He could not say she created the case because of Ava.
Meanwhile, the school assault moved through entirely separate channels.
Oak Creek’s district office opened a student-safety investigation.
Police interviewed Nora and Ava.
Child-services personnel were notified because of the severity of the injury and the questions surrounding adult responses.
Max remained a child.
He was not treated like an adult criminal.
He was temporarily removed from direct contact with Ava while the district investigated.
Richard called that discrimination.
Elena said nothing publicly.
Then Ms. Dalton contacted the district investigator.
She had something Elena had never seen.
Three previous written reports concerning Max.
All submitted.
All closed by Principal Harris.
One included a note:
Parent donor relationship requires careful handling.
Another included:
Resolve informally to protect school-community partnership.
The words were not written by Richard.
They were written by Harris.
The principal’s terror in the office finally made sense.
He had not merely failed to stop bullying.
