Chapter 8 - Mom Took Back the Decision

Clara appointed Jamal’s firm and an independent fiduciary to help organize her finances.

Not me.

Not Veronica.

That hurt both of us in different ways.

Good.

We both needed to learn that helping Mom did not entitle us to manage her.

She revoked Veronica’s authority over online banking.

She did not accuse her of stealing everything.

She requested a formal accounting.

She suspended any pending land transaction.

She also executed a narrow new financial power of attorney naming the professional fiduciary first and me only as backup.

“Why Marcus?”

Veronica demanded.

Mom answered:

“Because he lives far away.”

I laughed.

Veronica did not.

Mom explained:

“He can’t take over my kitchen from Texas.”

Fair.

Veronica’s caregiving role ended.

That consequence was not entirely a relief.

For eighteen months, she had structured her schedule around Mom.

Suddenly she had no medication boxes to fill.

No appointments.

No Sunday arguments about salt.

She called me one night.

“I don’t know what to do with myself.”

“Rest.”

“Don’t be sarcastic.”

“I’m not.”

She cried.

That did not make the trench disappear.

It reminded me that people can do terrible things after years of making themselves indispensable.

Clara began meeting with an elder-law attorney separately from Jamal for long-term care planning.

She toured two independent-living communities.

Hated both.

“Everyone there looks old.”

“Mom, you’re seventy-six.”

“That’s different.”

She chose a small senior apartment community outside Macon instead.

Own kitchen.

Emergency call system.

Transportation.

Visiting nurse available if needed.

She paid from her own funds.

Her life became less dramatic.

Mine became more complicated.

I returned to Houston for a week.

My wife, Danielle, finally said what she had been holding in.

“You’re going to move to Georgia, aren’t you?”

“No.”

“You’ve been acting like you have to become the good child now.”

I stared at her.

She was right.

Guilt had become its own form of takeover.

Veronica failed Mom.

Therefore Marcus must compensate by becoming perfect.

Same trap.

Different direction.

I negotiated with work for one week a month remote from Georgia for the next quarter.

Danielle and I kept Houston as home.

I called Mom every other day instead of monitoring her every hour.

The independent fiduciary handled bills.

The senior community handled transportation.

Mom handled complaining.

Balance.

The financial accounting from Veronica’s joint account came back.

Most disputed care expenses were documented.

Chad’s consulting fees remained questionable because Clara did not understand the scope.

Veronica had also transferred $14,000 to herself over eighteen months labeled care reimbursement.

“For what?”

she asked during mediation.

Lost work hours.

Gas.

meals.

managing Mom’s needs.

I had never paid her directly for caregiving.

“Did Mom agree?”

“She said I should not lose money taking care of her.”

Clara remembered saying something similar.

Again, ambiguous.

We could spend $40,000 litigating $14,000.

Mom chose not to.

“Keep it.”

Veronica cried.

“I’ll repay it.”

“Then repay what you can prove you shouldn’t have taken.”

Mom’s boundary surprised me.

She was not interested in revenge accounting.

She wanted clean records going forward.

Then Chad’s business records produced the first evidence that made Veronica call me voluntarily.

“Marcus, I didn’t know about this.”

“About what?”

Chad had negotiated a second payment tied to the land sale.

Not from Piedmont Ridge.

From another party.

A local infrastructure contractor.

If Clara’s parcel sold and the development proceeded, Dawson Residential Strategies would receive another $120,000 for road-access consulting.

Chad’s total potential compensation:

more than $200,000.

Veronica had known about the $85,000.

May you like

She claimed she knew nothing about the second agreement.

For the first time, my sister was asking herself whether Chad had been using her desperation too.
