Chapter 7 - THE SIGNATURE CAME FROM MOM’S COMPUTER

Digital evidence answered one question.

The forged signature image came from the old refinancing packet.

The file had been stored on Mom’s laptop.

Its creation metadata showed the guaranty PDF was assembled on a computer registered to NorthSound’s business office.

That did not identify who clicked what.

Then the lender produced an email.

From Travis.

Attached:

SHANNON FOSTER GUARANTY — SIGNED.

Message:

Wet confirmation will be completed in person Tuesday. Family medical situation has accelerated timing. Please hold enforcement until 5 p.m.

Tuesday.

The day Mom went to the hospital.

Rebecca looked at me.

“He was already using the hospital situation in the lender communication.”

“What time was the email?”

“8:41 a.m.”

Travis called me at 9:16.

Mom had reached the ER around six.

NorthSound’s debt did not appear after she became sick.

They simply found a way to use the sickness.

Then another message surfaced.

From Dr. Thorne to Travis.

Bring full package. If she resists, keep discussion focused on Linda’s health. Don’t start with NorthSound.

My stomach turned.

The phrase from Room 412 suddenly had context.

Fear makes her sign.

Maybe he meant me specifically.

Maybe it was a disgusting sales tactic.

Either way, he had written it.

The hospital review now had more than my memory.

Mom denied seeing those emails.

I believed her.

Then Rebecca asked:

“How did Travis get the scanned signature packet from her computer?”

I called Mom.

“Did you send him my old refinance documents?”

Silence.

“Mom.”

“He asked for the closing package.”

“Why?”

“He said the lender needed family asset information.”

“Did you know my signature was in it?”

“I didn’t think about that.”

Maybe true.

Maybe not.

Then she added:

“I never thought he’d use it like that.”

That was the first time Mom sounded betrayed by Travis too.

But she still added:

“He was desperate.”

There was always a second sentence protecting him.

I started recognizing it before she finished the first.

The lender’s records revealed something else.

A note from their account officer:

Guarantor reportedly has liquid reserves >$170k from recent real estate sale.

I read it twice.

“How did they know the exact range?”

Rebecca didn’t need to answer.

Family.

My condo sale had not been private.

Mom knew the proceeds.

Travis knew roughly.

They had built the rescue package around how much they believed I could access.

The $155,000 number wasn’t simply what NorthSound needed.

May you like

It was what they believed I could cover without becoming homeless.

In their minds, that made the plan reasonable.
