Chapter 11 - What Sebastian Had Helped Create Without Knowing
The truth about Julian did not restore Sebastian’s authority.
It weakened it.
The Bellamy board placed him on temporary leave while the audit committee completed its review.
No one accused him of joining the fraud.
The issue was governance.
For years, Sebastian had allowed Eleanor informal access to executives, legal teams, and company events because she was his mother and the founder’s widow.
He allowed Julian to manage family-adjacent matters without normal scrutiny because Julian was his brother.
He permitted Bellamy Medical and Bellamy Family Holdings to share advisers, office space, and social relationships.
The boundaries were legal on paper.
In practice, they were porous.
Sebastian had built a professional company while leaving one hallway open for family.
His mother and brother walked through it.
At home, Clara’s due date moved closer.
Sebastian accompanied her to appointments only when she invited him.
They began couples counseling.
The first session was brutal.
The therapist asked Clara what she needed from Sebastian.
“Not protection.”
Sebastian looked at her.
Clara continued.
“Protection is what everyone in his family says when they decide something for somebody else.”
“What do you want instead?” the therapist asked.
“Information. Choice. And the right to be believed before there’s video.”
Sebastian had no defense.
He faced another consequence.
The Bellamy Family Foundation froze several programs while outside accountants reviewed its grants.
Some charities had done nothing wrong.
A women’s shelter lost a scheduled donation.
A free clinic had to delay buying a van.
Eleanor blamed Sebastian publicly through relatives.
“You’re hurting poor people to punish your mother.”
The manipulation almost worked.
Then Sebastian remembered how often Eleanor made harm the responsibility of whoever exposed it.
He arranged for Bellamy Medical—not the foundation—to honor legally permitted community commitments through an independently administered fund.
The company’s counsel imposed safeguards.
No Bellamy family member could direct the grants.
Eleanor called it another humiliation.
Sebastian began to understand that humiliation was simply Eleanor’s word for losing control.
Julian, meanwhile, agreed to cooperate with investigators.
His attorney hoped cooperation might reduce future charges.
Eleanor did not.
She insisted everything had been done to protect Bellamy.
The family fracture became complete.
One evening Clara asked Sebastian a question he could not answer quickly.
“If the investigation ended tomorrow and the board offered you your job back, would you take it?”
“Yes,” he said automatically.
