Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Where He Lost Everything

Dupont Manufacturing’s emergency board meeting was held inside the company’s century-old factory in Long Beach.

Martin entered with three attorneys. Alana followed in a white suit and pearls, smiling at the reporters waiting in the hallway.

She expected to remove me from the building.

Instead, she found me sitting at the head of the conference table.

Daphne sat beside me wearing a simple black dress. The swelling around her eye had faded to purple, but she made no attempt to hide it.

Martin stopped in the doorway.

“What is she doing here?”

“I own shares,” Daphne said.

“You are under medical supervision.”

“I was discharged this morning.”

Alana looked at the board members. “This meeting is becoming a circus.”

Franklin placed the Hawthorne financing agreement in front of her.

“Bartlett Automotive Group has exercised its emergency voting rights after documented fraud and attempted asset concealment.”

One director turned toward Alana. “Bartlett owns Hawthorne?”

“Bartlett owns the debt, the equipment liens, and enough convertible voting rights to control this meeting,” Franklin replied.

Martin’s attorney began reading. His face tightened with every page.

“This can’t be enforced,” Martin said.

“It already has been,” I told him.

Alana looked at me as if seeing me for the first time.

“You allowed us to believe you were poor.”

“I never discussed my finances with you.”

“Daphne deceived my son.”

My daughter finally looked directly at her.

“I wanted Martin to love me without knowing what I might inherit.”

“And he did.”

“He loved me until loving me became less convenient than using me.”

Martin stepped closer. “Daphne, we can resolve this privately.”

“You lost the right to ask me for privacy when you watched your mother hit me.”

The room went still.

His attorneys urged him to sit down, but he ignored them.

“You signed the loan documents.”

“One document.”

“Your signature appears on all of them.”

“Copied signatures appear on all of them.”

He looked toward the directors. “She knew about DLM. She created the company.”

For one painful second, I wondered whether anyone would believe him.

Then Daphne placed the flash drive on the table.

“That’s what they wanted from me yesterday.”

Franklin connected it to the conference system.

The screen displayed internal messages between Martin and Alana.

Alana had written: Once the loan clears, move the liabilities under Daphne’s name.

Martin had replied: She’ll never understand the documents.

Another message appeared.

If she refuses the final transfer, we will use the psychiatric evaluation.

Daphne had never received a psychiatric evaluation.

Martin had paid a physician to prepare one using appointment notes from her obstetrician.

Then the audio from the mansion played.

“You stole twelve million dollars in my name,” Daphne’s recorded voice said.

“We protected the company,” Alana answered.

The sound of the slap echoed through the boardroom.

Several directors turned away from Martin.

Alana stood suddenly. “This was illegally recorded.”

Daphne’s voice remained calm. “It was recorded in my home while you were committing a crime against me.”

Martin moved toward the flash drive.

A security officer blocked him.

“Sit down, Mr. Dupont.”

For the first time, his confidence collapsed.

I presented the final report: bank tracing showed that Alana and Martin had transferred millions into personal accounts while preparing to close the factory.

“You told Daphne the fraud was necessary to save eight hundred jobs,” I said. “You were planning to fire every one of those people.”

A union representative stood near the back wall.

“Is that true?” he demanded.

Martin looked toward his mother.

Alana answered for him.

“The company belongs to our family.”

“Not anymore,” Franklin said.

The board voted to remove Martin as chief executive and Alana as chair. Their access to the company’s accounts, offices, and facilities was terminated immediately.

When the doors opened, two bank-fraud investigators and Beverly Hills detectives were waiting outside.

Martin looked at Daphne. “You did this to me.”

She stood slowly.

“No. I stopped helping you hide what you did to yourself.”

As officers escorted him into the hallway, Alana turned toward me.

“You’ve destroyed my family.”

May you like

I looked at the daughter she had tried to break and the workers gathering beyond the glass walls.

“You confused your control with a family,” I said. “They were never the same thing.”
