Chapter 3 - THE DEBT BENEATH OUR MARRIAGE

Jason worked as a financial controller for his father’s commercial flooring company. I had assumed our money was stable because he handled every bill and showed me monthly spreadsheets.

The spreadsheets were fiction.

Maya found a home-equity application for $460,000 against the house my mother had left me. My electronic signature appeared on every page.

I had never applied for the loan.

Jason needed the money because Mark’s company was close to insolvency. They had used customer deposits to cover old projects, then borrowed from personal accounts to keep payroll moving.

The Europe trip had been prepaid before the crisis. Canceling would have exposed losses Linda and Emma did not know existed.

Two months earlier, Jason had persuaded me to sign a broad power of attorney, saying he needed it to manage insurance claims during my illness. I signed on his tablet without reading the final pages.

That mistake belonged to me.

What he did with it did not.

The lender had paused the home-equity loan after its fraud department tried to call me for identity verification. Jason needed me unavailable long enough to explain why I could not answer questions.

A documented medical crisis would also support his claim that I lacked capacity to revoke the power of attorney.

“He didn’t need you dead,” Maya said carefully. “He needed you sick, isolated and easy to discredit.”

The distinction gave me no comfort.

Emma sent another message that night.

This time, there were screenshots.

Jason had written to Mark before the trip:

Check on her after twenty-four hours. If she’s confused, call an ambulance and tell them she’s been refusing care. Do not mention the medication.

Mark replied:

I don’t like this.

Jason answered:

Then decide whether you want the company and Emma’s tuition to survive.

Mark had been assigned to discover me after enough time had passed to make the medical crisis useful.

He returned early because he had left his passport in the study.

He found me conscious.

He still obeyed his son.

Emma explained that she had hidden the prepaid phone after noticing Jason taking my cell while I slept. She had wanted me to have a way to call for help but had been too afraid to explain.

“Why are you sending this now?” I asked.

Her reply came several minutes later.

Because Dad came back to the hotel without his passport, and Jason told us you were fine. I knew they were both lying.

Then she sent one final screenshot.

It showed Jason ordering a lower dose of my medication under my name three months earlier.

My flare had begun the following week.
