Chapter 10 - THE SECRET MARCUS HAD KEPT SINCE NORA WAS EIGHTEEN
The major twist did not come from Silas.
It came from Marcus.
Fifteen years earlier, Nora’s mother, Elaine Bennett, had not died leaving a small insurance policy as Nora had always believed.
She had owned twenty percent of Northline Industrial Group.
Elaine was an accountant before illness forced her to stop working. During Marcus’s early expansion, she structured acquisitions, negotiated credit and prevented him from losing the company twice.
When she died, her shares transferred into a trust for Nora.
Marcus served as trustee.
Nora had been eighteen.
The trust was now worth more than a billion dollars.
Nora stood in Marcus’s office unable to speak.
“You let me think everything was yours.”
“I thought anonymity protected you.”
“From what?”
“From being chosen for money.”
She laughed once, bitterly.
“I married Silas without knowing, and he still found a way to use my assets.”
Marcus looked older than he had at the hospital.
The trust explained several earlier clues.
Why Northline’s lawyers monitored Calder transactions involving Nora.
Why Marcus’s family trust appeared in the Meridian plant sale.
Why Silas had become obsessed with Nora’s estate planning after secretly discovering a reference to the trust during a mortgage update.
He did not know its full value.
He knew enough.
The pregnancy intensified his urgency because Nora had recently asked an estate attorney how ownership should pass to her child.
Silas feared the trust would be locked away from him permanently.
He began building corporate and insurance structures that would increase his leverage before the baby arrived.
The company fight and the marriage betrayal were connected by one motive.
Control before Nora learned how much independent power she already possessed.
But Marcus was not innocent.
He had failed to provide Nora annual trust accountings in a way she understood. Lawyers sent formal notices to an address Marcus controlled, satisfying technical requirements while preserving the family secret.
He had treated adulthood as if it were another risk category he could manage for her.
Nora’s anger shifted.
Silas had exploited hidden wealth.
Marcus had hidden the wealth.
Both men had built plans around what Nora did not know.
“What happens to the trust now?” she asked.
Marcus answered quietly.
“You remove me as trustee if that is what you want.”
He slid the trust agreement across the desk.
For the first time, the most powerful man in the room gave her the document before making the decision.
Nora read the removal provision.
