Chapter 14 - THE LAST CHANCE TO CALL IT LOVE

Sarah agreed to structured supervised visitation only if Mason completed the required evaluation, complied fully with the protection order, and stopped contacting her through relatives.

He called the conditions punishment.

She called them the beginning.

At the hearing, evidence of his repeated presence near Sarah’s house and his continued monitoring behavior made accountability unavoidable. The judge extended restrictions while the custody case proceeded and kept any contact with the twins supervised.

No permanent custody ruling happened that afternoon.

No one lost parental rights in a single scene.

The system moved more slowly than fear.

Diane sat behind Sarah.

Afterward she approached in the courthouse hallway.

“I want to see Noah.”

Sarah shook her head.

“Not yet.”

Diane looked wounded.

“I’m his grandmother.”

“Then start acting like what he needs matters more than what you’re called.”

Diane swallowed.

“What do you want me to do?”

Sarah had spent years answering that question for everyone.

She refused now.

“Figure out why you saw me sick on the floor and still thought Mason’s feelings belonged in the emergency.”

Diane cried.

Sarah waited.

This time Diane did not use the tears to end the conversation.

“I thought admitting you were right meant admitting I helped put you there.”

Sarah looked at her mother.

“You did help.”

Diane’s face folded.

“I know.”

It was the first complete admission Sarah had heard from her.

Across the hallway Mason watched them.

He looked furious.

Maybe because Diane had finally stopped defending him.

Maybe because the family he once controlled through separate loyalties had started speaking directly to each other.

Sarah took Jenna’s arm and walked away.

She did not know whether Diane’s admission was the beginning of repair.

May you like

She only knew it had arrived too late to prevent consequences.

And for once, consequences were not being negotiated around Mason’s comfort.
