Chapter 4: Press Play
The click of the recorder sounded louder than anything in the bathroom.
A faint male voice filled the room.
Steven’s voice.
He was laughing with someone. Talking about the afterparty. Talking about Kayla like she was not a person. Talking about putting something in her drink so she would not be able to leave.
Then he said one sentence that made my blood turn cold.

Kayla made a broken sound and pulled away from him.
Daniel stepped between Steven and our daughter.
“Get out of my house,” he said.
Steven backed up, but then he smiled.

At my husband.
“I don’t think you want to do that, Mr. Adams,” Steven said. “And I think you know why.”
Daniel’s face went white.
The room seemed to tilt.

I lifted my phone and pressed record.
Steven saw it too late.
