Chapter 10 - THE DAUGHTER MARLENE COULD NOT ALLOW TO LEAVE

The major twist came from a financial record.

Not ours.

Marlene’s.

Six months before Natalie became ill, she sold her condo.

She told everyone she wanted to simplify after retirement.

She moved most of the proceeds into certificates of deposit.

But $96,000 went into renovating the basement of a larger house she planned to buy outside Powell.

The purchase never closed.

Why?

Because the mortgage application listed expected household members.

Margaret Cole.

Lily Brooks.

No Natalie.

No me.

The lender questioned why Marlene expected a minor grandchild to live with her.

Marlene withdrew the application.

Three earlier clues changed meaning instantly.

Her guardianship research was not theoretical.

Her comments to Lily about someday living together were not jokes.

And her obsession with portraying Natalie as incapable had begun before she moved into our guest room.

Marlene had already imagined a future where Lily lived with her.

Why?

Scott knew the answer.

After their father died, Marlene became consumed with the idea that her children had moved on too easily.

Scott remarried.

Natalie built a family with me.

Then we began considering a move to North Carolina.

I had been offered a regional management job outside Charlotte.

We told Marlene in May.

Natalie became sick in June.

If we moved, Lily would be nearly five hundred miles away.

Marlene could tolerate Natalie being an adult daughter nearby.

She could not tolerate losing daily access to the granddaughter who had become the center of her identity.

She did not plan to kill Natalie.

She planned to make her medically unreliable long enough to prevent the move and establish herself as necessary.

The second pill container was not random.

It was the mechanism.

The falsified logs were the narrative.

The legal research was the destination.

Marlene wanted a temporary crisis she could turn into permanent influence.

What she underestimated was dosage.

Natalie became far sicker than she intended.

Then Lily saw the switch.

That was when the entire plan began collapsing.
