Chapter 14 - MATTHEW ASKED CLAIRE TO CHANGE ONE WORD
The divorce was almost complete when Matthew’s criminal attorney approached Claire’s counsel with a request.
Not to drop anything.
Claire could not control that anyway.
They wanted clarification in her victim-impact materials.
Claire had written:
Matthew waited outside while I was trapped in the garage.
His attorney wanted:
Matthew remained outside while I was trapped in the garage.
Claire read both versions.
One word.
Waited.
Remained.
The attorney argued waited implied a specific intent beyond what Claire could know.
Claire hated that he might be right.
She remembered the window.
Matthew outside.
The door sealed.
Her lungs beginning to burn.
Every part of her believed he had waited deliberately.
But what could she prove she knew about his thoughts?
Amelia asked:
“What do you want to do?”
Claire looked at the statement.
“Change it.”
Amelia raised an eyebrow.
“To remained?”
“Yes.”
That did not weaken the facts.
The garage was closed.
The wall control disabled.
The interior door locked.
The vehicle remote-started from Matthew’s fob.
Rachel saw him outside.
Rachel’s video showed delay before he opened the door.
Claire did not need one verb to carry an intent it could not independently prove.
Matthew heard about the revision.
He sent one message through the approved system.
Thank you for being fair.
Claire stared at it.
Then wrote nothing.
Fairness was not a gift to Matthew.
Accuracy belonged to Claire.
The divorce decree was signed two weeks later.
Claire received her equitable share of marital assets.
The home was sold because neither wanted to remain there.
Matthew’s company buyout obligations became part of the final property settlement.
Claire moved into a smaller house three miles from Rachel.
The first feature she checked before making an offer was the garage.
Manual release.
Exterior keypad.
Interior lock.
Carbon monoxide detector.
Then she hated herself for checking.
