Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE EMILY REFUSED TO GIVE HIM
Daniel arrived at the ICU after hospital security informed him that his employee badge no longer granted clinical access.
He wore a charcoal suit and carried no overnight bag for Lily.
Security stopped him at the unit entrance.
As Lily’s father, he could request a personal visit. Because of the ongoing medication investigation, he could not enter pharmacy areas or participate in drug decisions without supervision.
Emily agreed to let him see Lily from the doorway.
Daniel looked at their daughter for less than ten seconds before turning toward Emily.
“We need to speak privately.”
“No.”
“Don’t perform for the nurses.”
“You told me Lily was worth less than Vanessa.”
“I was trying to make you understand the stakes.”
“You made the stakes clear.”
Daniel glanced toward the security officer.
“Vanessa was deteriorating. Her insurer denied treatment. I had a replacement dose available.”
“It belonged to Lily.”
“I could replace Lily’s dose through our system.”
“But you didn’t.”
“The shipment was delayed because you triggered an investigation.”
Emily stared at him.
He had constructed a sequence where his decision created the emergency and her response became the cause.
Rachel arrived carrying the emergency petition.
Emily requested temporary authority over Lily’s nonroutine medical decisions, restrictions preventing Daniel from accessing Lily’s records through his employment, and an order barring either spouse from moving additional marital funds.
The court would not decide the entire custody case that day. Rachel sought only immediate protections tied to the hospital conflict.
Daniel read the documents.
“You’re using our daughter to take control.”
“I’m stopping you from using her treatment to control everyone else.”
His voice dropped.
“If I lose my license, we lose the house.”
“Then you should have protected your license.”
“You have no idea how much Lily’s care costs.”
“I know exactly how much it costs. I also know she is not an expense you get to eliminate.”
Daniel stepped closer, and security moved between them.
He left without entering the room.
The court granted a temporary order that evening. Emily received primary authority over urgent treatment while Daniel could obtain information only through approved patient channels. Marital accounts were restricted from further unusual transfers pending a hearing.
The decision carried immediate costs.
Daniel’s salary was frozen during administrative leave.
Emily canceled automatic payments from the joint account and discovered the mortgage would be due in nine days. Their emergency savings held less than she expected because Daniel had moved money into several accounts connected to an LLC called DMC Access Strategies.
Judith called again.
“Withdraw the complaint,” she said. “Let the hospital handle this quietly.”
“The hospital is handling it.”
“You know what I mean.”
“Yes. You want him protected from the hospital.”
Judith’s voice hardened.
“You are not the only person who loves Lily.”
“No. But I’m the person who stayed beside her after Daniel chose someone else.”
The hospital investigator contacted Emily that night.
Vanessa had been located at a private infusion clinic in Bloomington. She had received the exact medication lot assigned to Lily.
The clinic’s intake paperwork listed DMC Access Strategies as the party responsible for payment.
Daniel’s company had paid to administer Lily’s drug to his mistress.
