Chapter 10 - What the Pendant Had Really Been For
The truth changed nearly every assumption Daniel had made.
The pendant was not evidence that Amanda had been secretly obsessed with Laura.
Laura had entrusted it to her.
Amanda’s knowledge of the lullaby, the carnations, the mustard, and the embarrassing college stories had not originally come from stalking Daniel’s family.
Laura had specifically asked Amanda to preserve those memories for Sophie.
Even Amanda’s presence at the hospital fundraiser looked different now.
After Laura’s death, Amanda had spent months debating whether to fulfill the promise.
Her first approach to Daniel had begun with something real.
That was the first reversal.
The second was worse.
Amanda had not hidden Laura because she hated her from the beginning.
She had initially been doing exactly what Laura asked.
During the first months Amanda knew Daniel, she quietly introduced Laura’s stories into Sophie’s life.
She hummed the old tune.
She remembered tiny preferences.
She talked about Laura without admitting why she knew them.
Daniel had interpreted that as uncanny compassion.
It had actually been a promise.
Then the meaning had changed.
Amanda fell in love with Daniel.
Daniel fell in love with Amanda.
And instead of telling him the truth before the relationship became serious, Amanda became frightened that the truth would make everything look calculated.
So she delayed.
Then delayed again.
Every month made disclosure more dangerous.
By the time Daniel proposed, Amanda had built a relationship that depended on one lie remaining invisible.
The third reinterpretation came from the wedding itself.
Amanda’s terror over the pendant had not been about an old embarrassing photograph.
The pendant could lead Daniel directly to Laura’s final emails.
Those emails contained the boundary Amanda had crossed:
This is about Sophie. Not Daniel.
And they contained the promise Amanda had broken:
I won’t make this about us.
But one detail still did not fit.
If Amanda had once protected Laura’s memory for Sophie, why had she recently begun removing it?
Why had she asked Daniel to move photographs?
Why had she snapped when Sophie touched Laura’s jewelry box?
Why had she hit a twenty-month-old child while searching for the pendant Laura explicitly wanted Sophie to have?
Daniel finally understood the deeper conflict.
Amanda had not spent the last year pretending Laura never existed.
She had spent the last few months trying to erase the evidence of what she herself had become.
