The monitors were already screaming when Dr. Ethan Harrison ran into the maternity emergency room.
Cold blue light washed over the white sheets.
Nurses moved fast around the bed.
A pregnant woman lay weakly beneath the harsh hospital glow, one hand resting protectively on her stomach while the monitor beside her beat out a rhythm no one wanted to hear.
“Thirty-two weeks,” a nurse said. “Twins. Pressure dropping.”

He forced himself back into the room.

He placed one hand near the belly monitor and leaned close.
“Hannah, listen to me. I’m here now.”

“You left us.”
