Chapter 13 - THE EVIDENCE THEY COULD NO LONGER SHARE
Troy did not confess.
He left after Anna entered the house and advised everyone that the discussion should end. But the confrontation changed who was willing to cooperate.
Melissa gave investigators the old dispatch notebook Troy kept in their garage. He preferred handwritten changes because he believed digital scheduling created unnecessary oversight.
On the page for our trip, the five o’clock retrieval had been crossed out.
Beside it, Troy had written:
R says cancel. D beacon active. Hold until inspection rescheduled.
Richard’s lawyer argued that “R” could refer to anyone. The rest of the evidence narrowed the meaning.
Phone records showed Troy called Richard for forty-six seconds at 11:58 a.m., minutes before Luis received the cancellation. Richard’s key card opened the company office at 11:51, and the satellite beacon connected to the office network at 12:06.
Richard could not have believed I was carrying it when he approved the cancellation.
Elaine signed a statement describing the planned route, the orange ribbons, and the promised pickup. She admitted writing both notes and removing our food under Richard’s instructions.
“I kept waiting for one of the men to say they had checked,” she told the investigator. “I was afraid to ask because I already knew what the answer might be.”
Melissa admitted watching Troy remove the beacon and failing to report it.
Luis Benton’s company provided electronic driving logs from both hauling trucks. The records showed the cabins had been staged down the road before our hike and that the crews returned directly to company property.
The final piece came from one of Mercer Mountain Structures’ longtime drivers, Calvin Shaw. He had been assigned to the retrieval vehicle before Troy canceled it.
Calvin told investigators he objected because a child was involved. Troy responded that Daniel had emergency equipment and needed “enough time to look unstable when somebody found him.”
Calvin had not understood the full plan. He had assumed family members remained nearby.
His statement established what the notebook could not: Troy wanted the rescue delayed because my condition was part of the financial strategy.
The lender called a special meeting of the company’s members and secured creditors. Richard and Troy were ordered to attend. Because I still owned thirty-four percent, I received formal notice.
Anna explained that the meeting would not decide criminal guilt. It would determine control of the business, the handling of assets, and whether the bank referred additional findings to federal authorities.
The sheriff’s office had already submitted the endangerment investigation to the county attorney.

The only remaining question was whether Richard would continue protecting Troy when doing so could cost the company, his house, and whatever relationship he still hoped to have with Noah.
