Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY GALA BUILT ON LIES

Matteo Russo did not send men to attack us.

He did something more effective.

He went public.

By noon, every major New York gossip site carried photographs of me entering Alessandro’s penthouse. Anonymous sources described me as a waitress who had manipulated Luca in Central Park to gain access to the Russo fortune.

My mother gave a statement claiming I had become obsessed with my father’s death and was using forged evidence to blackmail the family.

At the café, customers whispered when I walked past. My manager officially fired me.

Matteo then called an emergency board meeting during the annual Russo Foundation gala at the Plaza Hotel. He planned to remove Alessandro as chief executive for “reckless conduct that endangered the company and his child.”

“He wants you to hide,” Alessandro told me.

“Then we should disappoint him.”

The ballroom glittered with chandeliers, white flowers, and hundreds of people who had learned to fear the Russo name without knowing why.

Matteo stood on the stage in a tuxedo, calm and handsome. He resembled Alessandro enough that strangers might have mistaken them for loyal brothers.

My mother sat near the front beside Richard.

When I entered with Alessandro, the room filled with murmurs.

Matteo smiled.

“Sophia Blake. The woman who turned an act of kindness into an impressive career opportunity.”

The insult was carefully designed. I was not Daniel Blake’s daughter, a witness, or the woman who had protected his nephew.

I was a waitress reaching above her place.

“I no longer have a career,” I said. “Your people made sure of that.”

“My people?”

“The same kind who visited my apartment.”

He looked toward the audience with patient amusement.

“She has brought documents she claims prove that I murdered her father and my sister-in-law. The accusations are painful, especially because her own mother says Sophia has struggled with paranoid beliefs.”

Every face turned toward Karen.

My mother stood.

For one second, I hoped she would finally choose me.

“My daughter has always had a powerful imagination,” she began.

The final piece of my heart went quiet.

Alessandro stepped forward, but I touched his arm.

I did not need him to rescue me from her.

“Did I imagine the money Matteo paid Richard after Dad died?” I asked.

My mother looked down.

Matteo laughed. “A legitimate consulting payment.”

“Did I imagine you telling her my father should have listened?”

The laughter stopped.

Alessandro signaled to the technician controlling the ballroom speakers.

Matteo’s recorded voice filled the room.

Your husband should have listened.

My mother’s younger voice followed.

You promised Sophia would be safe.

Guests turned toward Matteo.

His expression barely changed.

“An edited recording from nearly twenty years ago proves nothing.”

“Then perhaps the federal agents waiting outside can examine the original,” Alessandro said.

Matteo’s eyes sharpened.

The ballroom doors opened, but no one entered yet.

He still believed he had room to control the story.

“You would destroy this family over a dead accountant?”

Alessandro’s restraint finally broke.

“Daniel was family before you decided blood gave you permission to betray everyone.”

Matteo looked at Luca, who stood beside Bianca under Marco’s protection.

“And you brought your son into this.”

Luca pressed closer to his grandmother.

Matteo’s gaze shifted to me.

“Do you know why the boy was alone in Central Park?”

Alessandro went still.

Matteo smiled.

“Security footage will show Luca chasing a dog. It will also show one of my contractors releasing that dog beside him.”

A wave of horror moved through the room.

The park incident had not been designed to bring me into Alessandro’s life. Matteo had never known I would be there.

He had planned to take Luca during the confusion and use the kidnapping to force Alessandro out of the company.

I had ruined it by stopping.

Marco stepped toward the stage.

Matteo raised both hands. “The child was never going to be harmed.”

“He was five years old,” I said.

“He is a Russo. Fear is part of his education.”

Luca heard him.

Alessandro crossed the ballroom with such controlled fury that several security men moved between the brothers.

I reached the stage before he did and faced Matteo.

“My father died because he refused to let you frighten him into silence. Isabella died because she tried to protect her son. You used Luca because you believed everyone else would keep walking.”

I looked around the ballroom.

“I didn’t.”

My mother suddenly left her seat.

She climbed the steps and stood beside me.

Matteo’s confidence flickered.

Karen reached inside her purse and removed an old phone.

“He contacted me yesterday,” she said. “He told me to discredit Sophia or he would release evidence showing I helped him locate Daniel.”

“You already admitted that,” Matteo replied.

“Not all of it.”

My mother connected the phone to the ballroom microphone.

Matteo’s voice played again—new, clear, and unmistakable.

Daniel’s daughter should have died with the secret. If Alessandro won’t surrender the company, finish what your cowardice started.

Federal agents entered the ballroom.

Matteo looked toward the side exit.

Marco was already standing there.

My mother began crying.

“I’m sorry, Sophia.”

I looked at the agents approaching her.

“Tell them the truth. All of it.”

May you like

She nodded.

For the first time in seventeen years, she did.
