Chapter 10 - The Affair Was Also Bait

The answer came from Kenneth’s own notes.

He kept a private digital journal because his divorce attorney had advised documenting serious marital conflicts.

The advice was ordinary.

What Kenneth wrote was not.

Four months before the hospital incident:

Sabrina still checks the embryo account. Need clean separation before she weaponizes them.

Six weeks later:

If she reacts publicly to Maya, that resolves the stability question.

Two weeks before I found the hotel receipt:

M thinks S needs to see enough to force her hand.

And three days before the hospital:

Leave trail. Do not engage first.

I felt physically ill reading the entries.

The affair was real.

The attraction was real.

The sex was real.

But being caught was not entirely an accident.

Kenneth and Maya had decided my reaction could serve them.

They expected screaming.

A confrontation at Luke’s house.

Maybe public humiliation.

Something they could document as proof that I was unstable and vindictive after pregnancy loss.

They did not predict the specific revenge I chose.

That was mine.

But they deliberately placed emotional explosives in my path and waited to see whether I would strike a match.

The twist reinterpreted everything.

The obvious receipts.

The synchronized photographs.

Kenneth’s months of notes about my mental state.

The forged embryo form.

Even Maya’s hospital cruelty—“I took the life you couldn’t keep”—made sense inside a larger effort to portray me as obsessed with fertility and unable to accept the end of my marriage.

Kenneth wanted two outcomes.

Control over the divorce narrative.

And removal of the embryos before I could challenge him over them.

Maya wanted a future with Kenneth that contained no remaining reproductive connection to me.

Neither needed me institutionalized or declared incompetent.

They only needed enough doubt to make every objection I raised look like another symptom.

The damage was immediate.

My own reckless act now sat inside a trap they had prepared.

David looked at me across his conference table.

“You understand something important?”

“That they set me up.”

“No. They set up circumstances hoping you would react badly. You still chose what you did.”

I nodded.

That distinction became the center of my recovery.

I could expose manipulation without turning my choices into theirs.

When Luke read the journal excerpts, he cried.

Not loudly.

He covered his face and said, “She helped him plan how you’d break.”

Then he asked the question I had been avoiding.

“If they were willing to do that to you, what were they planning for me?”

May you like

The answer was already inside another account we had not reviewed.

Maya had been moving money too.
