Chapter 9 - MARK’S MONEY HAD ANOTHER DESTINATION
The financial review revealed something I had not expected.
Mark had not been sending money to Eleanor because she was broke.
Her condo was paid off.
Her pension was comfortable.
The transfers funded a business.
Eleanor and Mark had created an LLC eight months earlier.
M&E HOME TRANSITIONS.
The idea was to help older homeowners downsize, prepare homes for sale, and coordinate estate cleanouts.
There was nothing inherently wrong with it.
The irony nearly made me laugh.
My unemployed husband and his mother had started a business helping older people move out of their homes while forcing my mother out of ours.
Mark had invested nearly $28,000 of household funds.
Some came from money I believed was going to Mom’s childcare account.
Some came from Mom’s rent.
Some came from our emergency savings.
He never told me.
“Why?”
Mark finally answered during a mediated financial meeting.
“Because you would’ve said no.”
I stared.
“Correct.”
“You hate risk.”
“No. I hate being tricked into risk.”
“The business is good.”
“Then why hide it?”
“We needed runway.”
“Whose runway?”
He looked down.
M&E had one client.
The business barely existed.
But Mark had already leased office space and paid for branding.
Eleanor believed it would replace his software income.
She had convinced him that being fired was an opportunity.
Again, fear became entitlement.
He was ashamed to tell me he lost his job.
So instead of admitting it, he built another identity in secret and financed it with money flowing through two women who did not know they were funding him.
That still was not Part 10’s biggest truth.
The bigger truth came from what M&E’s business plan said about Mark.
Under management biographies:
MARK KELLER — Founder, full-time primary parent, household operations specialist.
I read it twice.
Primary parent.
Household operations specialist.
His custody narrative was already being repurposed as a professional identity.
Mark had not created the childcare schedules only for a lawyer.
He had spent months rebuilding himself after job loss around one central story:
He was not an unemployed husband living on his wife and mother-in-law.
He was the parent managing the home while his ambitious wife traveled.
Eleanor reinforced it.
Every diaper Mom changed threatened that identity.
Every pediatric appointment Mom attended contradicted it.
