Chapter 4

CHAPTER 4 — The Board Dinner
At seven o’clock, I walked into the Ashford dining hall wearing the navy suit my mother had chosen for me.
Evelyn sat at the head of the table beneath a chandelier of white crystal.
Board members lined both sides.
Her attorney stood near the fireplace.
Dr. Mercer was there too, holding a glass of wine like his hands were clean.
My mother smiled when she saw me.
“There you are,” she said. “We were beginning to worry.”
I looked at her.
That face had comforted me as a child.
Controlled me as a man.
Buried my wife while she was still breathing.
“I had an unexpected guest,” I said.
Her smile did not move.
“Oh?”
My investigator, Marcus Vale, entered behind me with two federal agents.
The room went silent.
Evelyn’s eyes flicked once toward Mercer.
Just once.
Enough.
Marcus placed a folder on the table.
“Dr. Henry Mercer,” he said, “we have financial records, falsified medical documentation, and property transfer evidence connected to Lena Ashford’s disappearance.”
Mercer’s glass slipped from his hand.
It shattered on the floor.
Evelyn stood slowly.
“Daniel,” she said, “whatever this is, we should speak privately.”
I looked at the woman who had taught me all my life that privacy was where powerful families buried rot.
“No.”
The dining room doors opened.
Lena stepped inside holding Grace.
A security officer stood beside her.
For the first time in my life, I saw my mother truly afraid.
Not emotional.
Not offended.
Afraid.
Whispers broke around the table.
Lena did not look weak anymore.
She was pale.
Thin.
Exhausted.
But she was standing.
Grace slept against her shoulder, wrapped in the same white blanket.
I walked to my wife and stood beside her.
“This is Lena Ashford,” I said. “My wife. Alive.”
No one moved.
“And this is Grace. My daughter.”
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“She is lying.”
Lena looked at her.
“No,” she said softly. “You are finished.”
Marcus opened the second folder.
“DNA confirmation has already been expedited. We also have surveillance from the Aspen property, payment records to private guards, and Dr. Mercer’s sealed testimony request.”
Mercer collapsed into a chair.
Evelyn looked at him with pure hatred.
So that was how it ended for her.
Not with loyalty.
With a coward she had paid too well and trusted too much.
The federal agent stepped forward.
“Evelyn Ashford, we need you to come with us.”
My mother looked at me.
“You would do this to your own blood?”
I looked at Grace.
May you like
Then at Lena.
“No,” I said. “I’m doing it for mine.”
