Chapter 4 - VANESSA’S VERSION OF THE TRUTH

Nina refused to let me meet Vanessa alone.
Two days after Lily’s birth, Vanessa arrived at a conference room inside the hospital’s administrative wing. Nina sat beside me. Dad waited outside with Lily while a hospital social worker remained near the door.
Vanessa no longer wore red. She had on gray slacks, a plain sweater and no makeup. Without Adrian beside her, she looked less powerful and more exhausted.
She placed a laptop on the table.
“I knew he was married,” she said. “I’m not going to insult you by pretending otherwise.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because he lied to me too.”
Vanessa had undergone a hysterectomy after cervical cancer at twenty-nine. Adrian told her I had agreed to carry their embryo in exchange for enough money to leave the marriage. He showed her signed contracts, payment confirmations and emails supposedly written by me.
She wanted to believe him.
That did not explain why she had walked into my hospital room and claimed Lily.
“I saw you reaching for her,” Vanessa said. “I knew then.”
“Knew what?”
“That you hadn’t agreed.”
I waited.
“And you still tried to take her.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled, but she did not look away. “Yes.”
She opened the laptop. The files included draft affidavits accusing me of striking Adrian during pregnancy, screenshots of messages I had never sent and instructions from Celeste about how to provoke me in front of staff.
One message read:
Do not let Claire hold the baby after Adrian enters. She will panic. We need witnesses to describe her as irrational.
Another told Vanessa to touch Lily immediately so I would become physically aggressive.
The cruelty in the hospital room had not merely been personal.
It had been staged to produce evidence.
Vanessa also showed us monthly transfers from Hale Meridian to a consulting company registered under Celeste’s former surname. Nearly nine hundred thousand dollars had moved through it in eighteen months.
Adrian’s company was facing an investor audit. If the missing money was discovered, both he and Celeste could lose everything.
“What does that have to do with Lily?” I asked.
Vanessa closed the laptop halfway.
“Adrian said once you were declared unstable, he could pressure you into signing whatever he needed.”
“What did he need me to sign?”
She slid a draft settlement across the table.
It required me to give up custody, waive claims against Adrian and transfer my remaining ownership in Hale Meridian back to him.

I had forgotten the shares existed.
Adrian had not.
