Chapter 6 - WHAT LILY HEARD THROUGH THE DOOR

I chose the truth.

That did not make the choice feel clean.

Daniel met me three days later in a conference room at Megan’s attorney’s office. My incision still pulled when I sat down. Noah slept in a carrier beside my chair. Lily stayed in the next room with Megan, coloring while a child advocate waited nearby.

Daniel’s attorney had advised him not to speak. He came anyway.

The investigator placed printed access logs, bank statements, and Daniel’s messages across the table. Nurse Harper joined by video and confirmed that Marcus’s badge copied Daniel’s vendor number but lacked the hospital’s current color strip.

Daniel kept looking at Noah.

“I never wanted anyone hurt.”

“You planned around my exhaustion,” I said. “You waited until I was medicated, recovering from surgery, and alone.”

“I thought you’d refuse if I asked.”

“That was the answer.”

He rubbed his wedding ring with his thumb. “I was trying to save the house.”

“You were trying to save how I saw you.”

For the first time, he looked directly at me.

“Yes.”

The honesty landed harder than another excuse.

He was afraid I would leave if I knew the business had failed. He resented that my mother’s money remained legally protected for Lily’s education while he struggled to pay household bills. He envied the certainty with which I rejected Marcus because Daniel had spent his whole life bargaining with men who frightened him.

None of that excused what he did.

It did explain why he had kept choosing the next lie.

The advocate entered carrying a folded sheet of paper. Lily had asked her to give it to Daniel.

He opened it slowly.

She had drawn the hospital bed, Noah’s bassinet, and three adults. Daniel stood near the elevator, outside the room.

Under the picture, she had written:

You left Mom with him.

Daniel covered his mouth.

His attorney leaned closer. “You don’t have to answer questions today.”

Daniel lowered the paper.

“Yes, I do.”

He admitted contacting Marcus, sending the hospital details, accepting the money, providing the badge image, and arranging the meeting. He also disclosed where the shell-company records were stored and agreed to turn over his phone.

The investigator asked one final question.

“Did Marcus tell you what he planned to do with the newborn?”

Daniel’s face changed.

“He said taking the baby would make Rachel follow him anywhere.”

From the next room came the scrape of Lily’s chair.

She had heard him.

Daniel turned toward the closed door just as Lily began to cry.
