Chapter 6 - THE PERSON ASHLEY WAS REALLY AFRAID OF

After the investigators left, Ashley went upstairs and packed.

Ethan followed her.

Their argument shook the ceiling above the living room.

“You betrayed me.”

“You lied to me.”

“You signed the loan application.”

“Because you said Tom knew.”

“You knew enough.”

A bedroom door slammed.

Linda sat beside me on the couch.

“Do you believe her?”

“Some of it.”

Ashley had been involved.

Her messages proved she knew the signature was forged before the deed was recorded.

But she also seemed genuinely shocked by the size of the loan and Ethan’s agreement with Malcolm.

“She wanted the house,” Linda said.

“Yes.”

“That does not mean she understood the entire plan.”

My wife had always been able to hold two truths at once.

Ashley could be greedy and deceived.

Ethan could be manipulated by Malcolm and still responsible for what he chose.

At noon, Ashley came downstairs carrying two suitcases.

A red mark crossed her wrist.

Linda noticed first.

“What happened?”

Ashley pulled down her sleeve.

“Nothing.”

Ethan appeared at the top of the stairs.

“She’s being dramatic.”

Linda stood.

“Did he grab you?”

“Stay out of it.”

Ashley’s voice was sharp, but her eyes were frightened.

Ethan descended.

“She is my wife.”

The sentence sounded exactly like his claim about the house.

Mine.

Ownership disguised as relationship.

I stepped between them.

“Ashley, do you want to leave?”

“Yes.”

“Then you leave.”

Ethan laughed.

“She doesn’t have anywhere to go.”

“My sister is coming.”

“Your sister hates you.”

“Because of what you told her.”

Ethan’s face changed.

Ashley continued.

“You said she refused to help us. She said you never called.”

“This is not the time.”

“It is exactly the time.”

Her voice rose.

“You told your parents Malcolm offered eight hundred thousand. The contract says one point two million. Where was the rest going?”

“Into the project.”

“Whose account?”

Ethan did not answer.

Ashley opened her purse and removed a second phone.

“I found this in his truck.”

She placed it on the coffee table.

Ethan lunged.

I caught his arm.

“Sit down.”

He struggled once, then stopped.

The phone required a six-digit code.

Ashley entered it.

“Our anniversary.”

The message history revealed Ethan had been communicating with a woman named Vanessa for nearly a year.

Vanessa was the real-estate agent who had visited our house.

She was also listed as co-manager of the Nashville development company.

Ethan had promised Ashley a new home.

He had promised Vanessa a new life.

The missing portion of the sale proceeds was intended to purchase a penthouse in Nashville under Vanessa’s name.

Ashley read the messages in silence.

Her face did not collapse dramatically.

It simply emptied.

“You were leaving me.”

Ethan looked toward the window.

“It was complicated.”

“You used my aunt to notarize a forged deed.”

“You agreed.”

“Because I thought we were doing it together.”

“That doesn’t make you innocent.”

“I know.”

Ashley looked at Linda.

“I wanted your house.”

Linda said nothing.

“I talked about your furniture like you were already gone. I made you feel like a guest in your own kitchen.”

Tears filled Ashley’s eyes.

“I am sorry.”

Linda’s expression remained guarded.

“You’re sorry now because he planned to abandon you.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised all of us.

“But that doesn’t make the apology false.”

Ethan stepped toward her.

“You’re not giving them that phone.”

Ashley backed away.

“I already copied everything.”

His hand rose.

I moved between them.

“Do it.”

Ethan froze.

“Give me one excuse to make the next call easier.”

He lowered his hand.

Ashley’s sister arrived minutes later.

Before leaving, Ashley gave the second phone to Linda.

“The messages include the loan broker, Malcolm, Vanessa, and Patricia. Everything.”

“Why give it to me?”

Ashley looked toward Ethan.

“Because he thinks women become powerless when he decides they no longer belong in the house.”

She picked up her suitcase.

“I believed him once.”

Then she walked out.

May you like

Ethan stood in the foyer watching his wife leave through the same gate where he had abandoned his mother.

For the first time, he understood what it felt like to be left outside a future he thought belonged to him.
