Chapter 9 - Daniel Changed His Story About the Deleted Photos

The police contacted Nathan the next morning about Bethany’s complaint.

Nathan did not pretend the punch hadn’t happened.

He described finding Rosie, acknowledged striking Bethany and provided the name of the clinic that had examined Rosie.

The officer explained that the child-safety allegations and Nathan’s act against Bethany were separate issues.

Nathan understood.

That distinction hurt, but he understood.

He had allowed himself one violent second.

He could not demand accountability from everyone else while inventing an excuse for himself.

Then Daniel stopped answering calls.

For almost two days, nothing.

Nathan assumed Walter had finally pulled him back into line.

Monday morning, while Nathan was speaking with a recruiter about a warehouse-management position, an unfamiliar number called.

He ignored it.

It called again.

A voicemail appeared.

“This is Rachel Mercer. Daniel gave me your number a long time ago for emergencies. I think this qualifies.”

Nathan ended the recruiter call and phoned her.

Rachel did not waste time.

“Daniel told me what happened to Rosie.”

Nathan stiffened.

“How?”

“He came to my house last night.”

Nathan hadn’t known Daniel and Rachel still spoke outside arrangements concerning Lucas.

Rachel continued.

“He finally told Lucas the truth about why our marriage fell apart.”

Nathan sat down.

“What truth?”

“That he didn’t delete the photographs of Lucas by choice.”

Nathan said nothing.

Rachel seemed to understand.

“He told you he deleted them, didn’t he?”

“Yes.”

“That’s the version he’s told for years.”

“What actually happened?”

Rachel hesitated.

“I think Daniel needs to tell you himself.”

Nathan nearly snapped.

Then Rachel added something more useful.

“Ask him who was holding his phone when the pictures disappeared.”

Nathan remembered Daniel in the grocery-store parking lot.

I deleted them.

He remembered the birthday party.

Daniel lunging toward Nathan’s unattended phone.

Bethany grabbing his wrist.

Walter hurling a glass.

Diane blocking Nathan’s departure with a threat almost identical to the one she had used six years earlier.

Nathan asked, “Why is Daniel telling the truth now?”

Rachel was quiet.

“Because Lucas asked him whether he would have stayed silent if Bethany had hurt another child.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“What did he say?”

“He couldn’t answer.”

An hour later Daniel appeared at Nathan’s house.

He looked worse than Nathan had ever seen him.

Nathan opened the door but did not invite him inside.

“Who deleted the pictures?”

Daniel stared at the porch boards.

Then he said:

“Walter.”

And in that moment, the birthday party stopped looking like one family disaster.

It started looking like a repeat.
