Chapter 2 - What Noah Heard Behind the Office Door

Richard did not open the folder.

Not yet.

First he dealt with Noah.

He took him to the lodge manager’s apartment above the kitchen, where the fireplace was already burning and the wind could not reach him.

Ben brought blankets.

The lodge’s on-call nurse, who handled minor guest emergencies during ski season, checked Noah while Richard stayed beside him.

No injury was apparent.

His fingers warmed normally.

His breathing settled.

But Richard heard enough to know the situation could not be dismissed as some old-fashioned disciplinary mistake.

“How long were you outside?” Richard asked gently.

Noah held up both hands.

Children were terrible clocks.

Richard stopped him.

“You don't have to figure it out.”

Noah nodded.

Mark stood near the doorway.

Claudia stayed behind him.

Richard had told them both not to come closer until Noah was calm.

Mark hated being ordered around in his own workplace.

Richard could see it.

Technically, however, the lodge was not Mark’s.

That distinction suddenly felt important.

Noah sat under the blanket with his airplane resting across his lap.

One wing had begun loosening.

Richard touched it carefully.

“We can fix that.”

Noah nodded.

Then he looked toward Mark.

“Daddy said I wreck things.”

Mark closed his eyes.

Richard turned.

“What did he wreck?”

“Dad.”

“I'm asking Noah.”

Mark’s voice sharpened.

“He’s five.”

“Yes.”

“Exactly. He heard half a conversation and decided he understood it.”

Richard turned back to Noah.

“What happened when you went into Daddy’s office?”

Noah looked at Claudia first.

Claudia looked away.

“I needed tape.”

Richard waited.

“Daddy and Claudia were talking loud.”

“What were they saying?”

Noah frowned, trying to remember.

“Daddy said the bank man comes tomorrow.”

Mark interrupted.

“Enough.”

Richard did not raise his voice.

“Leave the room.”

“Dad—”

“Now.”

Mark stayed.

Richard looked at him until he finally stepped into the hallway.

Claudia followed.

Richard closed the door.

Noah relaxed almost immediately.

That told Richard something he did not want to know.

“What else did you hear?”

Noah ran a finger along the airplane’s crooked wheel.

“Claudia said you would be mad if you knew.”

“Knew what?”

“I don't know.”

“That’s okay.”

“Daddy said you only had to sign one page.”

Richard thought about the folder downstairs.

Mark had described it as a routine refinancing authorization for winter improvements.

Richard had not yet read it.

He had intended to sign after dinner because he trusted his son.

That thought embarrassed him now.

Noah continued.

“Then I said I was telling you.”

Richard's chest tightened.

“What happened?”

“Daddy said I was spying.”

“Did he tie you outside?”

Noah nodded.

“Did Claudia help?”

Another nod.

“Who decided?”

Noah looked confused.

“Daddy said I needed to learn.”

Richard stopped.

He wanted details.

He wanted names.

He wanted a minute-by-minute explanation that would let him assign blame cleanly.

But Noah had already told him enough.

Richard took the airplane from his lap and examined the loose wing.

Underneath, written in a child’s unsteady blue marker, were four words:

FOR GRANDPA LOVE NOAH

Nothing hidden.

No secret evidence.

No message.

Just a birthday gift.

Mark had tried to take it because Noah had been holding it when he entered the office.

That seemed almost disappointing.

Richard had expected the object to explain the panic.

Instead, the panic belonged entirely to the adults.

There was a knock.

Ben opened the door slightly.

“Richard?”

“Yes?”

“Mark wants to know whether you're still meeting the bank representative at eight tomorrow morning.”

Richard stared at him.

“What bank representative?”

Ben looked confused.

“The refinancing people.”

Richard slowly turned toward the window.

Snow hammered the glass.

Noah leaned against him.

May you like

Richard had not agreed to any eight o'clock bank meeting.

Which meant whatever Mark needed signed tonight was already farther along than Richard had been told.
