Chapter 9 - The Conflict Beyond the Backyard
The investigation widened from abuse to financial exploitation and identity fraud.
Bank records showed Sarah created the online loan profile using Helen’s personal information. She uploaded a scanned signature, changed the mailing address, and arranged the first transfer to cover credit-card debt.
Jason became involved after discovering the available credit line.
He expanded the scheme, redirected larger amounts into his company, and enforced the confinement when Helen threatened to report them.
Sarah was not simply a wife pressured into one terrible decision.
She had opened the door.
Jason then made the house impossible to leave.
The distinction mattered in criminal court and family court, but it did not produce an immediate outcome. Investigators continued gathering bank records, device data, medical evidence, and witness statements.
The county prosecutor warned us that complex cases took time.
Meanwhile, the mortgage lender declared the home-equity line in default after fraud allegations froze payments.
The Westerville house faced possible foreclosure unless the debt was resolved.
Helen could lose the home even if she proved she never approved the loan.
Jason’s business collapsed when his equipment lender repossessed one truck and the enclosed trailer.
Two employees lost their jobs.
Sarah was suspended from her position as an office manager at a dental practice after her employer learned she had used similar document software to upload Helen’s signature.
She blamed the investigation for destroying their income.
The actual cause remained their choices.
Emily’s therapist helped her build a safety plan. She selected the adults allowed to pick her up, practiced saying no, and chose a night-light shaped like a moon.
She still hid crackers beneath her pillow.
Sarah requested permission to send a letter.
The court allowed her attorney to submit it for therapeutic review.
The first draft said:
Mommy is sorry Jason made our house scary.
The therapist rejected it because it shifted responsibility and asked Emily to comfort Sarah.
The second said:
I knew you were locked outside. I should have opened the cage. I did not.
Emily was not shown that version either.
She was not ready.
Then the pool company hired to drain and clean the property found a waterproof document pouch caught beneath the ladder.
Inside were copies of Helen’s trust amendment and handwritten notes.
One note contained a list of dates.
Beside each date, Helen had written the same initials.
