Chapter 7 - THE FUTURE SUSAN HAD ALREADY DESIGNED
Dana brought the documents over that night.
Michael did not invite Susan.
The paperwork came from Tripp Hollister, a real-estate agent Susan knew through church.
There was no valid listing.
No fraudulent signature from Michael.
Nothing that allowed anyone to legally sell the house.
But there was planning.
Comparable sales.
Estimated distressed-sale numbers.
A draft offer structure.
And a handwritten note on one page:
Dana + girls occupy immediately. Michael could rent smaller place closer to work.
Michael stared at the sentence.
His life had been reduced to one line.
Dana sat across from him.
“I swear I didn’t write that.”
“I know.”
“I signed the family-interest form, though.”
Michael looked at her.
“Why?”
She began crying.
“Because my divorce is wrecking me.”
Michael stayed quiet.
Dana explained.
Her husband had stopped contributing to rent.
Her attorney wanted another retainer.
The girls were sharing one bedroom.
Susan started saying Michael’s house was “too much house for one man and one child.”
“One child,” Michael repeated.
Dana closed her eyes.
“I should’ve stopped her.”
“But you didn’t.”
“No.”
Michael appreciated that she did not defend herself.
Dana continued.
“She said if the house went into default, we could protect it.”
“For whom?”
She looked at him.
“At first I told myself for everyone.”
“And later?”
Dana swallowed.
“For me.”
The honesty hurt less than another lie would have.
Then she showed him something else.
A text from Susan dated seven weeks earlier.
If we wait long enough, Michael will realize he can’t manage everything. Don’t pressure him yet.
Michael read it twice.
Susan had not merely expected him to fail.
She needed him to feel like he had failed on his own.
Dana reached for her phone.
“I’m done helping her.”
Michael looked up.
“What does that mean?”
“I’ll give your attorney everything.”
That changed the balance.
Susan had spent months quietly dividing the family.
Now one of the people she had been protecting was willing to stand against her.
But Michael knew Dana’s cooperation came with a cost.

For the first time, both siblings were being forced to choose between protecting their image and protecting Emma.
