Chapter 5 - THE TICKET WITH ONLY ONE NAME

The previous home sales were not identical.

One involved a lawful divorce. Another involved a couple who had jointly agreed to relocate. The third was still being disputed by a Marine stationed in Okinawa.

But the money followed the same route.

Brad created repair estimates through Ridgeway Home Solutions, deducted inflated costs at closing, and transferred funds into accounts he controlled before sending the remaining proceeds to the families.

The Marine’s wife believed Brad had used nearly ninety thousand dollars to buy and renovate another property.

Sarah’s transfers had helped finance it.

The house he planned to purchase was in Jacksonville, Florida.

He had shown Sarah photographs and described it as their future home.

The deed application listed only Brad.

Investigators also recovered an airline reservation from his email account.

The flight left Raleigh the evening after our scheduled closing.

One passenger.

Brad.

He had never planned to take Sarah or Lily to Florida.

The party inside my house had celebrated a future that existed only long enough to get Sarah’s signature.

Three clues now made sense.

Brad had insisted the house sell below market value because a quick closing mattered more than the price.

He redirected my messages because Sarah’s anger had to remain stronger than her doubt.

And when Buster growled at Lily’s sneaker, Brad tried to pick it up because the duct tape bore fibers matching a roll found in his truck.

He had put Lily outside after she saw him packing papers and asked why he was taking my things.

Her crying threatened the party, but it also threatened the plan.

During a second child interview, Lily described Brad carrying boxes to his truck. She said one box held “Daddy’s brown papers and the shiny card from his wallet.”

My passport and Social Security card were missing from the home safe.

Brad was preparing to leave with enough identification to open accounts or produce further forged documents in my name.

The major twist forced a choice I did not want.

Sarah had participated in the forgery and neglect. She had also become a target of Brad’s fraud.

If I withheld what investigators found, she might suffer financial consequences beyond anything she knowingly accepted.

If I helped expose Brad’s plan, she could use his manipulation to minimize her own responsibility for Lily.

I gave her attorney the evidence anyway.

Protecting the truth did not require protecting Sarah from accountability.

She called me after learning about the one-person plane ticket.

“I thought he loved me.”

“You left Lily outside for someone who planned to leave you at the airport.”

Her breath broke.

“I know.”

“No. You know now.”

She asked whether I would tell CPS that Brad controlled her.

“I’ll tell them exactly what happened.”

“Ryan, I could lose her.”

“You already chose a man over her. The court decides whether you can become safe enough to be her mother again.”

That evening, Brad was located at a storage facility outside Spring Lake.

Police found packed luggage, my identification documents, a notary stamp registered to someone else, and copies of the disputed property files.

He requested an attorney and answered no questions.

The following morning, Sarah asked for one supervised conversation with him.

The prosecutor refused a private meeting but permitted both of them to attend a formal recorded interview with counsel present.

I was asked to come because several documents required my identification.

For the first time since I kicked open the kitchen door, all three adults would sit in the same room without music, alcohol, or a child absorbing the cost of our choices.
