Chapter 4 - The Detail Vanessa Knew

The next morning, I met Vanessa in the library with Daniel beside her and Beth near the door, hands folded over the household ledger she never allowed anyone else to touch. I asked one question: why the bracelet accusation, the orders, and the bucket? Vanessa didn't deny any of it. She looked at Beth. “Every time I asked where overtime went, your sainted gatekeeper told me to stop acting above my station.” Beth's cheeks reddened. Daniel tried to interrupt, but Vanessa spoke over him. “And your fake maid knew the guest towels with the green monogram were upstairs, not in the service closet. Either she was planted, or this whole house hires psychic temps.” She should not have known that. I had changed the storage routine after a pipe burst last winter. Only family and staff knew. Beth answered too quickly. “She's lying because she got caught.” Daniel looked at Beth, not Vanessa. It was a small movement, but it changed the room. Vanessa laughed without humor. “Then explain Laurel's missing hours.” Beth's fingers tightened on the ledger. “Payroll software failed.” “Three times now?” I asked Vanessa how she knew. She said she had helped Laurel dispute a short check after the engagement gala. Beth called it an accounting error and warned Vanessa not to embarrass me with “servant complaints.” Beth had never used that phrase around me. Before leaving, Vanessa touched the bucket bruise on my sleeve with two steady fingers. “I was wrong about you,” she said. “But not about this house.”
