Chapter 1 - The Door I Never Expected to Open

The pounding came from inside the linen cabinet.
Not the hallway.
Not the laundry-room door.
The cabinet.
I dropped the basket in my hands and ran toward it.
“Lucy?”
The pounding stopped.
Then came one small, terrified voice.
“Mom?”
I yanked the door open.
My eight-year-old daughter stumbled forward in white socks and a pale pink T-shirt, crying so hard she could barely catch her breath.
I caught her.
“What happened?”
Lucy wrapped both arms around my neck.
“Richard locked me in.”
My husband.
The man who had packed her lunches, attended her school concerts, and spent five years telling everyone he loved her “like his own.”
I dropped to my knees.
“Why?”
Lucy pointed toward the stairs.
“He said I had to learn obedience.”
Something inside me changed.
“RICHARD!”
My scream carried through our Potomac house.
Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.
I kept Lucy behind me and walked toward the staircase.
Richard appeared at the top landing in his navy shirt.
His usual confidence was gone.
Then I noticed his hand.
Closed around something small.
Silver.
Pink beads.
Lucy’s bracelet.
The one she wore almost every day.
The clasp was broken.
“What is that?”
Richard looked down at his fist.
Lucy pressed against my back.
“Mom…”
I looked at her.
“He said Daddy’s things don’t belong here anymore.”
My stomach tightened.
Lucy’s biological father, Daniel, had died when she was three.
The bracelet had been his last birthday gift to her.
I looked back at my husband.
“Give it to me.”
Richard didn’t move.

Then Lucy whispered:
“He broke it because I wouldn’t call him Dad.”
