Chapter 5 - HAWTHORNE HOUSE DIDN’T EXIST

There was no Hawthorne House.

Not legally.

Not commercially.

The name existed only on Vellum House Events’ private sales materials.

Clara and Julian learned that over the next forty-eight hours.

Sienna had photographed the estate from carefully chosen angles and described it as:

An exclusive private Connecticut residence available to a limited number of Vellum House clients.

She had never listed the street address publicly.

That was why Clara had not found it online.

Interested clients received the location only after consultations.

Three couples had signed agreements.

October wedding.

December holiday reception.

May rehearsal dinner.

Total deposits collected:

$31,500.

Clara sat at the dining table with Julian and their attorney, Melissa Grant.

“Can she do that?”

Melissa shook her head.

“She can promise anything she wants. The question is whether she had authority to fulfill it.”

“She didn’t.”

Melissa looked at Julian.

“Did you ever give her permission to use the property commercially?”

“No.”

“Never?”

Julian hesitated.

Clara noticed.

“Julian.”

He remembered an email from three years earlier when Sienna planned a charity dinner.

“I may have told her she could use the house for client entertainment if Clara approved the dates.”

Clara looked at him.

“That matters.”

“I know.”

Melissa nodded.

“Find it.”

Julian did.

The email was exactly as he remembered:

Happy for you to use the place occasionally for client dinners if Clara is comfortable with the date and setup. She has final say because it’s her property.

Clara read it twice.

“That’s not commercial venue permission.”

“No,” Melissa said. “But Sienna may be relying on the first half when she explains herself.”

Julian rubbed his face.

“I gave her just enough ambiguity.”

“No,” Clara said.

He looked at her.

“You gave her conditional permission. She removed the condition.”

Melissa agreed.

“Both can be relevant.”

That afternoon, security clips arrived.

One captured Sienna and Evelyn in the kitchen before guests came.

Sienna’s voice:

“She keeps asking why there are venue brochures.”

Evelyn:

“Then keep her busy until people are upstairs.”

Sienna:

“She’s going to figure it out.”

Evelyn:

“Julian will smooth it over when he gets home. He always does.”

Clara stopped the recording.

She stared at Julian.

He looked sick.

There it was.

The family system in one sentence.

Julian will smooth it over.

Pay the card.

Cover the rent.

Calm Clara.

Forgive Sienna.

Protect Evelyn from choosing between her children.

Make the consequence disappear.

Julian stood.

“Not this time.”

Clara looked at him.

“Don’t say that because you’re angry.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

He sat again.

She continued.

“You’ve rescued them before because rescuing feels easier than being hated.”

Julian stared.

Clara had known him since he had $413 in his checking account.

She knew which parts of wealth had changed him and which had only given his old habits more expensive tools.

Julian said quietly, “You’re right.”

Clara nodded.

Then she looked back at the security clip.

“But your mother knew I hadn’t agreed.”

Melissa asked, “How do you know?”

Clara did not answer.

Julian turned toward her.

“Clara.”

May you like

She stared at the paused image of Evelyn.

“Because I told her six months ago.”
