Chapter 3

CHAPTER 3 — The Husband Who Reached the Wrong Way

Grant tried to become reasonable.

That had always been his favorite costume.

He smoothed his tie, lowered his voice, and glanced toward the open glass doors like he was worried the neighbors might hear.

“Let’s not make this dramatic,” he said.

I looked at the crushed cupcakes.

The scattered decorations.

My daughter’s trembling hands.

“Too late.”

Vanessa stood and tightened the red robe around herself.

“Grant told me the marriage was over.”

I kept my eyes on him.

“Did he tell you the house was?”

Grant’s face shifted.

Just slightly.

Good.

He remembered.

I had bought the Denver mansion before we married.

The deed was in my name.

The trust was in my name.

The investment accounts that paid for his lifestyle were structured through my family office before he ever learned which fork to use at charity dinners.

Grant had spent years telling people he “handled things at home.”

He did not.

He handled appearances.

I handled everything that mattered.

Lily whispered, “Mommy, can we go?”

I looked down at her.

“Yes, sweetheart. But first, adults are going to tell the truth.”

Grant stepped closer.

“Evelyn, don’t do this in front of her.”

I almost laughed.

He had not cared what Lily saw when Vanessa ruined her birthday.

He only cared now because the truth had witnesses.

I picked up my phone from the hallway table.

Grant’s eyes followed the movement.

“What are you doing?”

“Calling the family attorney.”

His calm broke.

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

Vanessa scoffed.

“Grant, stop letting her scare you. You said everything was basically yours.”

I looked at her.

“Basically is not a legal term.”

The room went silent.

Grant’s face drained of color.

I tapped one contact.

“Diane,” I said when my attorney answered. “I’m home. He brought her into the house with my daughter present.”

Grant whispered, “Evelyn.”

I looked at him.

“You reached for her first.”

His mouth opened.

No excuse came out.

Some betrayals need no confession.

They reveal themselves by instinct.
