Chapter 1 - The Closet Madison Pointed To

The rubber spider was almost as wide as Madison’s chest.
Lauren shoved it toward the three-year-old’s face again, jerking it back just before the black plastic legs touched her nose.
Claire laughed beside her.
Madison sat pressed against the living-room sofa, her small wrists looped together with a soft fabric tie. She twisted away as far as she could, strawberry-blonde curls sticking to her damp cheeks.
“Please stop! I’m so scared!”
Lauren gave Claire a look that made them both laugh harder.
“See?” Claire said. “She does it every time.”
Lauren brought the spider forward again.
Madison threw both hands in front of her face.
The front door flew open.
Grant stepped into the foyer with his leather briefcase in one hand.
For half a second, nobody moved.
Then his briefcase hit the hardwood floor.
Madison was crying against the sofa. Her hands were bound. Claire was standing over her. Lauren had already swept one arm behind her back.
Grant stared at his wife.
“What the hell is going on?”
Lauren recovered first.
She straightened her cream blouse and forced a small smile.
“I was just testing Madison’s bravery.”
Grant didn’t answer.
He crossed the room quickly, crouched beside his daughter, and pulled the fabric loose from her wrists.
Madison immediately reached for him.
He lifted her against his chest.
She locked both arms around his neck so tightly that he had to shift her weight to breathe comfortably.
Claire stepped backward.
Grant expected Madison to calm down once she was in his arms.
She didn’t.
That was the first thing that frightened him more than the spider.
Madison wasn’t looking at Claire.
She wasn’t looking at the toy.
She was watching Lauren.
Grant turned slightly so his body blocked his wife from Madison’s view.
“What happened while I was at work?”
Madison buried her face against his shoulder.
For several seconds, she only cried.
Then she whispered, “They lock me in there every day after you leave.”
Her tiny hand appeared beside Grant’s shoulder.
She pointed toward the closed hallway closet.
Grant followed her finger.
It was the coat closet ten feet from the living room.
The same closet Lauren had once complained was too small to hold the vacuum and winter coats at the same time.
Grant looked back at his daughter.
“Every day?”
Madison nodded against his neck.
Lauren stepped forward.
“She doesn’t understand what she’s saying.”
Grant turned.
“What does she not understand?”
“She has tantrums. Claire and I give her quiet time. That’s all.”
“In a closet?”
“It isn’t what you think.”
Claire suddenly found the floor interesting.
Grant noticed.
That tiny movement mattered.
Claire had been laughing thirty seconds earlier.
Now she wouldn’t look at him.
Grant’s anger moved faster than his judgment.
He put Madison down beside the sofa, took two steps toward Lauren, and slapped her across the face.
The sound was sharp.
Lauren touched her cheek.
Grant knew immediately that he had crossed a line too.
But before he could speak, Madison began crying harder.
Not because Lauren had been slapped.
Because Lauren was now staring at her.
And Grant finally understood the part he had missed.

His daughter wasn’t afraid of what might happen next.
She was afraid Lauren would punish her later for telling him.
